ABOUT NEW MEXICO -- The Lobos are 1-5 coming into this weekend's contests ... they are coached by Rich Alday (Emporia State '71) ... UNM was swept last weekend down in Tucson ... the Lobos are on a four-game losing streak ... ASU leads the all-time series with New Mexico, 96-19 ... last year ASU the two teams split two games in Tempe with UNM winning 8-7 and ASU winning 12-7 ... probable starting rotation: Fri.- RHP Brian Messer (0-2, 12.96 ERA), Sat.- LHP Eddie Misquez (0-1, 12.15 ERA) and Sun.- LHP Mike Albers (0-0, 6.97 ERA) or RHP Vance Bonner (0-0, 0.00 ERA) ... senior centerfielder Mike Campbell went 8-for-11 (.727) vs. Arizona with a homerun, double and three stolen bases ... sophomore third baseman Aaron Sisk tied a school record with three doubles against the Wildcats on Saturday.
BEINBRINK CLOSING IN ON CAREER MARKS-- Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink (San Diego, Calif.) returns for his senior season and will likely become ASU's career leader in RBI, surpassing current Sun Devil Clay Westlake (1973-76). The 6-3 infielder/outfielder has 211 RBI and needs just 39 RBI to become the all-time RBI leader (Beinbrink has averaged 66 RBI over the past three years). With his 59 career doubles, he is tied for third all-time at ASU (Westlake is the leader with 85 career doubles). Beinbrink could finish his career in the top five in seven of 10 offensive categories at Arizona State. The two-time first-team all-conference selection currently ranks eighth in the Pac-10 in career RBI as well. Beinbrink leads the squad in multiple-hit games with eight and is third in multiple-RBI games with three. His .453 batting average is tops among the starting lineup and his 24 hits and six doubles leads the team as well. Beinbrink is batting .524 with runners in scoring position
THE HIT MAN -- Returning junior All-American Willie Bloomquist (Port Orchard, Wash.) extended his hitting streak to nine game over the weekend vs. FSU. He leads the squad in multiple-RBI games with five and is second in multiple-hit games with six. His batting average has never dipped below .300 his entire career. He has drawn a team-leading 16 walks as well as 22 runs and 17 RBI. Bloomquist is batting .542 as a leadoff batter and is batting .471 with runners in scoring position. His .400 batting average is second on the squad among the starters. Bloomquist, along with Andrew Beinbrink lead the team in two-out RBI with six each. He was selected to both Baseball America's (second-team) and Collegiate Baseball's (third-team) preseason All-American teams.
WALDRIP STEADY ON THE MOUND -- Junior transfer Will Waldrip (Flagstaff, Ariz.) comes into this weekend's series with a 3-1 record as ASU's Saturday starter. Waldrip went 6.0 innings, allowed eight hits and five runs while suffering his first loss on the hill vs. Florida State. He still posts a healthy 1.86 ERA, allowing only six runs in 29 innings of work. He has nine walks to 31 strikeouts on the year. He became the first ASU pitcher since Doug Henry in 1983 to post back-to-back complete game shutouts earlier this year. Primarily an infielder at Brigham Young, Waldrip logged only 17.2 inning pitched last year for the Cougars. After transferring to ASU, he became a full-time pitcher. Waldrip pitched 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings before giving up his first run of the season in the third inning of Saturday's game vs. Howard. He is holding opponent batters to a .182 average at the plate.
PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS -- Sophomore righthander Chad Pennington (Hamilton, Ohio), who spent the summer rehabbing his elbow, is off to a solid start in 1999 . He is 2-1 through four starts with a 2.10 ERA. On Friday vs. FSU, he pitched 7.1 innings, allowing only five hits and three runs while taking the loss in a 4-1 game. He has allowed only one extra-base hit through 25.2 innings of work. He has only given up six free passes while striking out 28 as well. He is holding opponent batters to a .268 average.

Fifth season at Arizona State: 149-87
Div. I Record (11th year): 467-203-1
Career Record (14th year): 522-258-3
Pat Murphy now in his fifth season at Arizona State after spending seven years at Notre Dame, has left his mark on Arizona State baseball. In his first year, Murphy guided ASU to a 34-21 record and put together the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. In 1996, he directed ASU to a 35-21 record and a No. 25 final ranking by Baseball America. The 1997 season marked ASU's return to postseason play as ASU went 3-2 in the Atlantic Regiona, narrowly missing out on a trip to Omaha. The Devils finished with a 39-22 record and a No. 11 ranking by Baseball America and No. 14 ranking by Collegiate Baseball. Murphy has also started the Pitch-by-Pitch Baseball Academy which holds baseball camps and clinics year round, not only in Phoenix, but around the country as well. Last season, he was honored as Baseball America's Coach of the Year after guiding the Devils to a second-place showing at the College World Series. The '98 squad went 41-23, 18-11 (3rd) in conference. They won the Midwest Regional with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech to advance to the CWS for the first time since 1994.
The Syracuse, N.Y., native's Notre Dame teams recorded 45 or more wins in six of seven seasons and advanced to the finals of an NCAA Regional each of the last three seasons.
He also has international coaching experience, guiding the Dutch National Team to the European championship in the summer of 1987, and helping to develop baseball in Australia as a state manager in New South Wales in 1984.
