Coach Murphy's Responses

This Week's Winner of the ASU Baseball Cap: Ron Sanders

Jason Kennedy (Cave Creek, AZ)
Coach Murphy, every game I stand next to the dugout to watch the games. It seems every game there is a slew of Major League scouts next to me watching your players. How tough is it to try and build a good program knowing that these guys will try to snatch up your players as soon as they are eligible? Thank you.

Coach Murphy: It's a real issue in college baseball. We lose so many more players - about 50% of our incoming freshman and 90% of our juniors to the draft. In the last five years, pro ball has made a tremendous commitment to signing bonuses and college scholarship offers.

Ron Sanders (Springfield, IL)
With all the safety concerns with the metal bats, do you think the NCAA would consider going to the wooden bats in the interest of saftey, and the cost of the metal bats is outragous. What are your thoughts on going back to the wooden bat?

Coach Murphy: Saftey is always an issue - cost is not. The bat companies give us the aluminum bats and then some. I doubt if we would ever go to wood. These companies have meant a lot to amatuer baseball. A college game with wood might not get same response as you might think.

I went to school at Chapparal High School in Scottsdale Arizona and played baseball under coach Jerry Dawson. Since I moved to California I continue to follow ASU Baseball and travel to Cal. and Stanford when you come to town. Last year you had a player from my old high school on the roster. At the Stanford series I asked one of the assistant coaches about him and he said he was doing real good for the JV team. His name is Jason Bengert, and I don't see him on the roster this year. What happened to him? Is he still in the ASU Baseball system? See you at the Cal series! Good Luck in 2000.

Coach Murphy: Jason Bengert transferred to New Mexico. He had a chance to pitch more at UNM than we could promise him here at ASU. He is a great young man and I wish him the best of luck.

Our family is a big supporter of ASU Athletics down here at the Old Pueblo. Think you and your staff are doing a great job for the ASU program. Do you think ASU will have enough pitching to compete for the Conference Title? I know after the ASU/Florida State series, the TEAM has the heart to compete with anyone. Sweep the Wildcats in 2000!!

Coach Murphy: Thank you for your kind comments. Young and inexperienced doesn't mean incapable. I think we can compete for the conference title - it's the only way to think. Again thanks for your support down in Tucson - we will see you down there in a few weeks.

Hi Coach Murphy, I'm from Ontario Canada, and hope to be a Sundevil one day soon. I would like to know how someone like me, a Canadian, would go about getting look at by a scout from a prestigious school like ASU.

Coach Murphy: You did it. We will start a file on you if you send us your information, a video, etc. We recruit in all 50 states as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Australia, etc.
