Coach Murphy's Responses

This Week's Winner of the ASU baseball cap is Cheri Schnitker of Tempe, AZ!

Dean M. Donaher (Nazareth, PA)
Coach Murphy: Being a Sun Devil fan in eastern Pennsylvania is tough. All my information about the team comes from the internet. Is there a chance you would ever come east (Penn State) for a series? I would love to see ASU Baseball in person. Best wishes for a National Championship season.

Coach Murphy: We would love to go out East. I grew up in the East (N.Y.). With conference play in full force from April through May its tough to get back there. If we could work it out, though, we'd love to come out.

Valerie Cleary (Cincinnati, OH)
Coach Murphy, my Husband and I have long been fans of you and we've followed your coaching career closely. Your doing a great job again this year, keep up the good work. How do you feel your coaching style has changed from your early years? If so, in what ways? Thanks and best of luck with the rest of the season. Hope 2000 is your year.

Coach Murphy: Thanks for your kind comments. My coaching style has changed some. When I talk to the players I'm more focused and concise with my talks ... hopefully making my words mean something. Less negative emotions and emotional outbursts. And I don't worry about things I can't control.

I have heard through the baseball grapevine that ASU assistant coach Jay Sferra is rapidly earning the reputation of being the finest recruiters in the entire country. What is Coach Sferra doing to differentiate himself from such a distinguished group? Thank You!

Coach Murphy: You are correct. Jay Sferra is a tireless worker who does what he says he's going to do. He always follows up and always has a back-up plan. He is totally submerged in the pulse of amatuer baseball. Jay is honest and cares about the program as much as anyone can. He's the best!

Cheri Schnitker (Tempe, AZ)
In last Saturday's game against UNM in the 7th inning, Myers was out at home plate, Hines is running to first and called out on interference. But from my vantage point looking straight from home to 1st, I did not see anything unusual. What did he do that was wrong in his base running to have the ump call him out?

Coach Murphy: The umpire said he was outside the running lane between home and first. I didn't have a good view. But keep coming to Packard Stadium and supporting the Sun Devils!

Jesse Leon (Santee, CA)
I'm A great fan of the Sun Devils and the way you coach and control your team. I'm a High school student right now and I'm looking forward to be playing for you.I was wondering which skill you would prefer the player to be better at, the defensive or offensive part of the game, and why?

Coach Murphy: Thanks for your comments. We are looking for a "baseball player" with the ability to be solid defensively and have a solid approach offensively as to do something to put pressure on the defense. You are from a great area. Hope to see you at ASU someday.

Thanks again to all the fans writing in to "Ask the Coach"!
