Coach Murphy's Responses

This Week's Winner of the ASU baseball cap is Neil Hoffman of Buckeye, AZ!

Michael Fidler (Mesa, AZ)
After a defeat, how do you process the emotional feelings of the team WITH the team? Thanks for doing such an outstanding job with our team and for all the extra time you give to everyone!

Coach Murphy: Thanks for your kind comments. When you lose, that is when the team needs you the most. You have to support them and you can't use the results of that one game as the only measure of the team.

Nancy Kelleher (Duxbury, MA)
Your season began in January, and you are still going strong into May. Once again ASU has surprised a lot of people with this season's tough schedule and winning record. I know that the outstanding young men who play for you are totally committed and self-motivated. How do you, as their coach, continue to inspire them to remain focused week after week, month after month, big game after big game? What does a Pat Murphy pre-game pep talk sound like, especially during post-season play? Continued success to you all!

Coach Murphy: I stress to them the importance of growing as a person, believing in themselves, and dealing with adversity. A wise person once told me, "Conflict is inevitable, combat is optional." Thanks for the e-mail!

Chance Lake (Scottsdale, AZ)
If the Sun Devils finish second in the PAC, what are the chances of a regional being held in Tempe this year?

Coach Murphy: The chances are very good. There will be a regional in Tempe this year.

When a coach or player is ejected from a game, is there an automatic one game suspension? If so, when is that served? If my memory serves me right, you sat out a game immediately following your ejection earlier this season...however Coach Gillespie was coaching at Saturday's game after being ejected.

Coach Murphy: I sat out a game because they said I bumped the umpire. An ejection does not automatically earn a suspension from a game.

Neil Hoffman (Buckeye, AZ)
I have been following ASU baseball for 30+ yrs. and the trademark of the teams were that they always ran on and off the field, ran to first base on a walk, and ran back to the dugout on a strikeout. What is the reason that has appeared to have disappeared. I was used to seeing 2 to 3 hour games instead of 3 to 4 hour games. I watched the pros and they don't even jog on and off the field, they stroll. Is that what it's is coming to in college ball to? The attractive park has always been the hustle and enthusiasm of the players, we don't want to lose that.

Coach Murphy: Our team still runs on and off the field. The players would be very offended that you are asking this question. The only thing we don't do is sprint back to the dugout after a strikeout. In the 1998 College World Series, we were noted as the team with the most hustle by everyone in attendance.
