ASU's Jones To Compete In NCAA Home Run Derby

June 6, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz.-- Former Arizona State outfielder Mitch Jones (Orem, Utah) will compete in the NCAA Home Run Challenge Thursday, June 8 at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. The event is part of opening ceremonies for the 2000 College World Series, which begins Friday.

Jones, a seventh-round draft pick by the New York Yankees in this week's major league draft, led the nation in home runs for most of the 2000 season and currently ranks second with 27 round trippers in 55 games. His single-season total broke the 22-year-old mark of 25 home runs set by Bob Horner in 1978.

Jones will take on three other top home run hitters from NCAA Division I schools: Jeff Haase of Cleveland State (22 HR, 56 games), Louisiana Tech's T.J. Soto (21 HR, 55 games), and Chad Smith of Georgia State (21 HR in 56 games).
