ASU vs. USC Bobby Hurley and Remy Martin quotes(2/8/20)

Remy Martin

ON THE GAME-WINNING SHOT:
“Well we wanted to get the guard to guard again but we didn’t think they were gonna play it well and they didn’t. I didn’t feel comfortable playing how I was playing but I knew that shot was going to be open and since I’ve been here that mid-range shot has always been something I’ve been working on consistently and they messed up the guard to guard and I just pulled up to the elbow line which I was not hitting the whole game and you know it got the roll. As it was rolling I was like ‘please, all the hard work I’ve put in just at this moment drop through the whole’ and it did and then we just tried to get a stop on the defensive end and we did. I’m just happy about the win but at the end of the day we got to keep it going, stay hungry, and we’ll enjoy this one tonight but get back to the drawing board.”

ASU head coach Bobby Hurley

OPENING STATEMENT:
“I thought it was a really really gutsy effort by our guys really dug in and even if the last media timeout we talked about just getting stops and 50-50s and Tay had a big tie-up there and just getting to stops we needed really that last possession was good rotating defense and I’m just proud with how we guarded. We didn’t let our inefficiencies on offense filter over to our defense, our defense was pretty rock solid. We had that one stretch in the second half where we didn’t rebound well but outside of that to shoot 31% and to win against a team like this is a great win for us.”

ON INEFFICIENCIES:
“The inefficiencies, I think at times we over dribbled, we had too many turnovers and we didn’t cash in on some open ones that we made versus UCLA so we put some pressure on ourselves at that end of the floor but we made enough plays to win.”

ON GUARD TO GUARD:
“Guards don’t usually get involved in the hedges and we didn’t do it a lot during the game at all, we just wanted to save that, and that was what we wanted to go to late and it opened Remy up he really had a good look and made a big play.”

ON DEFENSE:
“It started with Teashon, and Mickey and Khalid and then from there the guards were scrambling. We turned them over some in the first half but it was really a problem in the second half and we knew we had to gain the momentum and be the aggressor in the game and that helped us.”

ON REMY MARTIN'S SHOT:
“He had an open look and that’s his shot when he get’s to his spot on the mid range shot those are his best in my opinion he stops really fast and goes right into his shot. I saw like everyone did it hit every part of the backboard it seemed like it was up there forever. He’s about the right things he works on his game unlike anybody I’ve ever been around in terms of the offseason he put the work in, and karma and the basketball gods were with him.”

ON TAESHON CHERRY:
“He was throwing his body around he was being physical I know he didn’t make any shots but he was having an impact on the game and his energy in our press was very effective so it was more his defense than what he had done on offense. He had a few chances he could have made a layup or an open three but it didn’t matter because of how hard he was playing and I wanted him out there. He’s one of our taller forwards and we were having trouble rebounding in the game”

ON TAESHON'S INJURY:
“He contested the pain very well and forced their point guard to throw their ball out to the half court and when he came down he landed awkwardly so he’ll get looked at on Monday. We’re going to be cautious we won’t have practice tomorrow.”

ON THREE-GAME WIN STREAK:
“As a coach, you just love a masterpiece and that felt like Washington and UCLA and this was far from that on offense but statistically they’re very good defensively and so some of it is a credit to them and their size and we didn’t play well and the end of the floor but had the will to win and found away and we are trending up in the standings right now and we just have to take that on the road this week.
