ASU Track Duo Named to Women's Academic All-District First and Second Teams

May 22, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State track and field athletes Lisa Aguilera and Kelly MacDonald were named to this year's Women's Spring At-Large Verizon Academic All-District VII first and second-teams, respectively, today, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Aguilera, a sophomore from Peoria, Ariz., has a 3.64 GPA in computer systems engineering. Her first-team All-District selection places her on the ballot for Academic All-America honors announced June 14. Earlier this fall, Aguilera was named a first-team Academic All-American and first-team Academic All-District selection for cross country.

During the 2001 track season, Aguilera was the world leader and collegiate record-holder in the women's 3000m steeplechase for 20 days (March 31-April 20). She has posted NCAA automatic qualifying times in both the steeplechase (10:08.85) and the 5000m (16:06.63), while earning a provisional qualifying time in the 1500m (4:19.90). An All-American in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, Aguilera placed third in the steeplechase at last weekend's Pac-10 Championships.

MacDonald, a senior from Tualatin, Ore., has a 3.63 GPA in English and was selected to the All-District second-team. She is a two-time All-American in indoor track (5000m) and one of three ASU women to earn cross country All-America honors. Last weekend at the Pac-10 Championships, MacDonald won the 3000m steeplechase before winning her second-straight 5000m conference crown. Her personal-best steeplechase time of 10:03.20 ranks third in the nation going into next week's NCAA Championships.

MacDonald's steeplechase time automatically qualified her for the NCAA Championships. She has also turned in provisional qualifying times in the 1500m (4:22.72) and the 5000m (16:14.81). MacDonald is the school record-holder in the outdoor 5000m (15:55.90), the indoor 5000m (16:31.41) indoor 3000m (9:34.56) and the 3000m steeplechase.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or significant reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school.

District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
