TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State men's and women's swimming teams began the 1999-2000 season by defeating their respective opponents from Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium. The Sun Devil men won by a margin of 214-80, while the ASU women prevailed over the Rebels 196-98 in dual meet action.
The University of Arizona men's and women's teams were also present in Las Vegas, but did not have their times scored against the Sun Devils. Diving events were held as exhibitions only.
On the men's side, Arizona State looked strong in the 200 yard breaststroke as junior Otto Hinks and senior Jon Tunstall placed first and second, respectively. Among ASU's eight other individual winners were senior Pablo Abal in the 100 backstroke (50.79) and Bo West in 100 freestyle competition (46.08). Relay teams again appear to be among the Sun Devil's strengths, as indicated by winning times of 1:31.43 in the 200 medley and 3:01.84 in the 400 freestyle.
The Arizona State women got an impressive outing from sophomore Sarah Baham, who posted victories in both the 100 and 200 yard butterfly events with marks of 55.94 and 2:02.67, respectively. Both those times are good enough for NCAA Championship consideration. In addition, ASU senior Carolyn Adel bested all swimmers in the 200 individual medley by clocking in at 2:04.80. The Sun Devils recorded victories over the Rebels in seven other races, including the 200 medley relay (1:45.90). UNLV freshman Lorena Diaconescu looked impressive by winning the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events.
The Arizona State women will commence their home schedule with a dual meet against Pac-10 foe UCLA on November 12 at 2:00 p.m. The following day both Sun Devil teams do battle with USC beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
