TEMPE -- Dallas Escobedo and Amber Freeman have been named 2014 NFCA Division I Second-Team All-Americans, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Wednesday afternoon.
For Escobedo, it was the third All-American honor of her career. That put her in the elite company of Katelyn Boyd, Katie Cochran, Phelan Wright and pioneer Paula Noel as the only Sun Devils to become All-Americans at least three times (Cochran is the only to do it four times).
It was the second selection of Amber Freeman’s career who will return to the Sun Devils as a senior next season. Freeman’s selection is especially noticeable as only three catchers are selected in total for the All-America team.
Escobedo finished her career as one of the most decorated Sun Devils in any sport, with one national championship and three trips to the Women’s College World Series under her belt.
The senior finished with a 1.95 ERA and a 24-9 record this season with an incredible 336 strikeouts to just 59 walks. She pitched 12 shutouts on the season and 30 complete games while holding opponents to just a 1.83 batting average.
Escobedo finished her career with a 115-26 all-time record (.815 winning percentage) and a 2.01 career ERA. She can three wins shy of matching Katie Burkhart’s school record of 118 victories.
She finished her career with 1,222 strikeouts, good for second in ASU history. She became just the 14th player in Pac-12 history to accomplish the 1,000 strikeout feat and finds herself 33rd in NCAA career history and sixth in Pac-12 lore for total strikeouts.
Escobedo reached the 300 strikeout plateau in three different seasons and holds the fourth, fifth and sixth highest strikeout totals for a single season in program history.
The junior finished the season with a career-high .406 batting average with a .659 slugging percentage and 11 home runs. She now has 41 career home runs and will enter her senior season ranked fifth in ASU history in the category.
Her .406 season batting average was the fifth-best single single average in program history. Freeman was ASU’s most consistent hitter throughout the year and finished with a team-leading .480 on-base percentage.
Freeman hit safely in all but 10 games on the season (including 27 of the last 31) and reached base in all but five games of the 57 appearances she has made. Additionally, Freeman had just one single error on the year, recording 318 putouts and 11 assists for a an almost perfect .997 fielding percentage. She led the team in most games with multiple hits, doing so in 18 games while tied for the team lead in games with three or more hits with five.
Freeman, the 2013 Pac-12 Player of the Year, was recently named to the Academic All-American team for the first time in her career. The junior catcher boasts a 3.43 GPA in health sciences.
Wednesday’s selection marked the 38th and 39th overall All-America selections for the ASU softball in program history. ASU has now generated 21 of those All-Americans since 2006.
