ASU Men's Tennis Sweep UTEP, 7-0

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State men's tennis team (2-3, 0-2 Pac-10) won its second consecutive home match in a 7-0 victory over UTEP (0-2, 0-1 WAC) Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

The Sun Devils won all three doubles matches to take the first point of the dual. ASU has not lost a doubles point in any of its five dual matches this year.

At No.1 doubles, sophomore Ed Carter and junior Tim Hammond defeated their opponents, 8-3. The No. 2 team, junior Gustavo Marcaccio and sophomore Alex Osterrieth, clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 victory. Freshman Peter Dani and junior Casey Was finished off the doubles matches with an 8-4 win at the No. 3 spot.

In singles action, Hammond clinched the dual with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over UTEP's Diego Garza. At No.1 singles, Marcaccio improved his overall record to 15-6 by defeating Gwinyai Tongoona, 6-3, 6-1, and Osterrieth topped Osvaldo Biffe in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.

At No. 3 singles, Carter battled from behind to beat Emmanuel Raux 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Dani defeated Angelo Vasilescu, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, and Was beat Andy Sanchez, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot.

The Sun Devils continue their four-game homestand Friday, February 20, 1998, when they take on the University of San Diego at noon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
