ASU Men's Golf Leads Pac-10

April 25, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. - The fifth-ranked Arizona State men's golf team leads the the 41st annual Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships by 17 strokes over Oregon. The championship, held at the ASU Karsten Golf Course (par 72, 7,027 yards), also has Sun Devil junior All-American Paul Casey at 13-under 131 (66-65) and leading the tournament by four strokes over teammate Jonas Runnquist (66-69=135).

Arizona State is the five-time defending Pac-10 champion while Casey is the two-time defending champion. No player has ever won three straight Pac-10 titles, although Sherman Finger of USC won three straight Pac-8 crowns from 1963-65. The Sun Devils are 30-under (339-351=690), while Oregon is at 13-under 707 (351-356). California is in third at 9-under 711 (359-352).

The 10 teams played 36 holes today and will play 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Play begins both days at 7:30 a.m.

Runnquist, ASU's lone senior, matched his career-low with a 6-under 66 in the opening round and then followed that with a 3-under 69 for a 9-under 135.

Junior Jin Park led ASU in the morning round with a career-low 65. His previous best was a 66 at the 1999 Arizona/Ping Intercollegiate in Tucson and at the 1998 Pac-10 Championships in Orinda, Calif. He shot 31-34 in his morning round. Park shot a 77 in the afternoon and is at 2-under 142. Oregon's Andrew Tredway also carded a 65 in the morning and finished at 6-under 138 (65-73).

"It is a great start, one that I felt we had a chance to do because the weather was perfect and so was the course," said ASU head coach Randy Lein. "I think the team was inspired by Jin's 65 at the beginning of the day. They all were excited for him when they saw that on the board."

"I hit the ball well all day and I birdied all of the par 5s, so that was the key," said Casey. "What was good for me was to see the team doing so well. When your teammates are playing well, it is hard not to play well."

Oregon State sophomore John Lepak shot 7-under 137 (70-67), while Oregon's Chris Carnahan matched Duck teammate Tredway with a 6-under 138 (71-67). Travis Johnson of UCLA is in sixth with a 5-under 139 (69-70).

CASEY ON THE CHARTS: Two-time defending Pac-10 Champion Paul Casey already has five championships for his career, tied for fourth on the ASU career wins list with 1993 NCAA Champion Todd Demsey. Next on the list is Charlie Gibson, who won six titles from 1972-75, while four-time All-American Billy Mayfair won eight titles from 1985-88. Sun Devil legend Phil Mickelson leads the list with an amazing 16 wins from 1989-92, including two ASU Thunderbird titles in 1991 and 1992.

KARSTEN KIND TO CASEY AND SUN DEVILS: Casey won the ASU Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational on April 15-16 with a 9-under 207 (69-69-69). It also marked the second title Casey has won at Karsten, as he won the 1998 NCAA West Regional in Tempe with a 10-under 206 (70-65-71). ASU has won its past three tournaments at Karsten, winning the 1999 and 2000 Thunderbird/SAVANE titles and the 1998 West Regional. ASU shot 30-under-par 834 in the 1999 Thunderbird en route to a 17-stroke win over UCLA and was led by Jeff Quinney's Karsten record 62 in the final round. This year, ASU shot 18-under (846) to top Arizona by two strokes.
