May 18, 1999
Arizona State hosts the 1999 Pac-10 Track and Field Championships, Friday and Saturday, May 21-22 at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils will look to improve upon their men's ninth-place finish and their women's seventh-place finish a year ago at the Pac-10s. ASU's men appear ready to make a significant leap from a year ago. The Sun Devil men are tied for 10th in the latest Trackwire.com national power rankings (May 12) while the women are out of the top 25 after breaking into the polls at No. 21 in the April 14th rankings.

Pac-10 Championships
This week is the third time ASU has hosted the Pac-10 Championships (1979 and 1991) as it is rotated among the nine conference members who field track programs. This year's championships will be the seventh conference championship meet held at Sun Angel Stadium since it opened in 1976 (1976 WAC, 1978 Intermountain, 1983 Big Sky, 1986 Pacific West). Tickets are currently available through the Sun Devil ticket office (480-965-2381). Single session tickets are $9 for adults, $5 for students/seniors/juniors. Two-day passes are $15 for adults, $9 for students/seniors/juniors and $7 for groups of 20 or more.
ASU Men in the Pac-10s
Since joining the league in 1979, ASU's men have five upper-division finishes including its only Pac-10 title in 1981. ASU has finished in the top four three times, but not since 1983. The Sun Devils have finished last in their past three Pac-10 Championship appearances (95, 96, 98). ASU has had 27 Pac-10 individual or relay champions, but only one since 1995 (Mika Laiho, men's hammer, 1998).
ASU Women in the Pac-10s ASU's women have compiled five top-three finishes since the women's championships began in 1987. ASU finished seventh last year and has never won a Pac-10 championship. The Sun Devils have had 30 individual Pac-10 champions including defending high jump champion Fiona Daly.
Pac-10 Improvement Tthe Sun Devil men appear poised to make one of the largest one-year leaps in conference history. The Pac-10's biggest one-year improvement is six places. It has happened four times, the most recently being Arizona's jump from eighth to second in 1992-93. The biggest jump for a last-place team came when USC jumped six spots in 1991-92. A team has leaped five spots three times.

Marcus Brunson After an indoor season that witnessed him break the collegiate record in the 60 meters with a time of 6.46 (later surpassed by Leonard Myles-Mills of BYU, 6.45) and place second in the NCAA Indoor Championships in that event, sophomore Marcus Brunson is participating in his first outdoor season as a collegian. To this point, he has focused on relay events and has run only four individual races to stay healthy (muscle soreness). However, his four individual races have been very impressive as he is the Pac-10 leader in both the 100 and 200 meters. He is 3-0 in the 100 and broke Ron Brown's 18-year-old school record by clocking a 10.10 at the Wildcat Qualifier (5/8). That mark is tied for sixth-best in Pac-10 history and is the second-fastest run this decade. In ASU's Double Dual with Arizona and Northern Arizona (5/1), he swept the 100 (10.25) and 200 meters and earned Pac-10 Male Track Athlete of the Week honors. His time of 20.42 in the 200 meters automatically qualified him for the NCAAs, is the fifth-fastest in the nation this year, the fifth-fastest in ASU history and the best at ASU since 1981. Amazingly enough, it was his first and only outdoor 200 meter race in three years. Meanwhile, he has anchored ASU's 4x100 squad that clinched an NCAA berth with an automatic mark of 39.06, fastest at ASU since 1982 and fifth-fastest ever, at the Sun Angel Classic. He also runs a leg on ASU's 4x400 squad, which has also automatically qualified for the NCAAs. Brunson, son of former ASU football player Michael Brunson and a graduate of Tempe's Marcos de Niza HS, transferred to ASU this year after focusing on football for two seasons at Wyoming. Brunson never competed outdoors for the Cowboys, due to spring football, but did set Wyoming records in indoor competition in the 55m (6.10) and 200m (21.21).

Dynamic Distance Duo Senior Priscilla Hein and sophomore Kelly MacDonald have given ASU's distance corps some teeth in 1999, as both have qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two events. Hein automatically qualified for the NCAAs in the 1500 meters and provisionally in the 3000m while MacDonald has provisional marks in both the 3000 and 5000 meters. Furthermore, sophomore Mary Duerbeck and the duo this season have cracked ASU's top 10 lists, joining Kim Toney, Lorrieann Adams, Sharette Garcia, Trish Huffmaster and Kristin Wellman as the only Sun Devils to appear in ASU's outdoor record book from the 1990s for a race of 1500 meters or more. In fact, Hein's 4:17.98 in the 1500m, eclipsing Toney's previous record of 4:20.69 (1993), is the first record set by an ASU female since 1995. After setting the mark at the Sun Angel Classic (4/10), Hein was named Pac-10 Female Track Athlete of the Week. Hein ran the sixth-fastest mark in ASU history in the 3000 meters (9:31.80, 5/1) to provisionally qualify in that event. MacDonald ranks fourth in Sun Devil history in the 3000 meters at 9:25.61 and sixth with a time of 16:42.19 in the 5000m. Her 3K time is the best mark at ASU since Lynn Nelson's 1984 record of 9:09.76 and the 5K time is the best mark at ASU since Cordell's 16:28.32 in 1992. Hein, who broke a seven-year old ASU indoor record in the mile (4:45.27), became the first female All-American in cross country at ASU in 1998, leading the Sun Devils to their first-ever appearance at the NCAA Championships, where they finished 23rd. MacDonald, ASU indoor record holder in the 3000 meters (9:34.97aa), was an Academic All-American in cross country as she sports a 3.26 GPA.
Fiona Daly The defending Pac-10 champion in the women's high jump, Fiona Daly is in the final year of a consistently successful Sun Devil career. Daly, the only Pac-10 champion in the high jump in ASU history, owns the conference's top mark of 1999 , clearing 6 feet even at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Her winning height of 5-11.25 at the Drake Relays (4/23) is the league's third-best outdoor mark of the season. In the last two years, Daly has won 12 of 17 outdoor high jump competitions she has entered, including six of eight and five in a row this year. Daly gathered her third top-six finish in the last four NCAA Indoor Championships, placing fifth in 1999. She made her first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance last year, finishing in a tie for ninth.
Tony Berrian Sophomore Tony Berrian provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400 meters, posting the Pac-10's second-fastest time this year with a 45.88 at the Sun Angel Classic (4/10). Berrian is the 1998 U.S. Junior national champion in the 400m and was the only freshman to make the Pac-10 400m final in 1998. Berrian went on to finish eighth at the 1998 Junior World Championships and was a member of the United States' second-place 4x400 relay squad. Berrian anchors ASU's 4x400 relay squad, which ranks fourth in the nation with an NCAA automatic time of 3:03.94. Berrian has also established a personal-record in the 200 meters in 1999, posting a 20.92 at the Double Dual (5/1). That time ranks fourth in the Pac-10 this year. Berrian participated in his first NCAA Championships during the indoor season, having eclipsed Herman Frazier's 21-year old ASU record in the indoor 400m with a time of 46.29, an NCAA automatic qualifier. He did not advance to the finals, getting tangled in his preliminary heat and running a 47.65.
Joronda White Arizona State senior Joronda White broke the 53-second barrier and posted a personal-best time of 52.76 in the women's 400 meters at the Double Dual (5/1). It is an NCAA provisional mark, 10th-fastest in the nation this year, third-best in the Pac-10 and tied for seventh on ASU's all-time top 10 list. White is seeking to make her first NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance, having participated in the 1998 NCAA Indoor meet.
Dwight Phillips A transfer from Kentucky in his first year as a Sun Devil, junior Dwight Phillips has made a dramatic impact on the ASU squad. After finishing second in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Phillips ranks fourth in the nation and first in the Pac-10 after winning the long jump at the Sun Angel Classic (4/10) with a leap of 25-11. The mark ranks as the fifth-best in ASU history and the longest since Kenny Frazier's 1984 ASU record of 26-8.5. Phillips has also posted a Pac-10 qualifying marks in the 200 meters (21.20) and 100 meters (10.51) while also running legs on the ASU 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads, both of whom have clinched NCAA berths.
Relay Rally The 1999 season has provided something that ASU hasn't seen in 17 years: changes to the men's relay record book. While the records haven't fallen, the Sun Devils have cracked the school's top 10 list in both the 4x100 and 4x400, the first time either list has changed since 1982. The men's 4x100 squad (D. Phillips, T. Berrian, J. McGee, M. Brunson) clinched a berth with an automatic qualifying time of 39.06 (Sun Angel Classic, 4/10), the fastest run at ASU since 1982, the fifth-fastest in the nation this year and the fifth-fastest in ASU history. The 4x400 relay (L. Robinson-Blanchard, D. Phillips, M. Brunson, T. Berrian) also automatically qualified for the NCAAs with a time of 3:03.94 (Penn Relays, 4/24). That mark ranks seventh in ASU history, sixth in the nation this year and tops for ASU since 1982. In addition, the women's 4x400 relay (A. Davis, J. White, C. Coulson, D. Linder) provisionally qualified for the NCAAs with a time of 3:34.55 (Texas Relays, 4/3), the ninth-best mark in the nation and second-best in the conference.
Indoor Success ASU had one of its most successful indoor seasons in recent history, as the Sun Devil men placed 11th at the NCAA Championships, best in school indoor history, and the women finished in a tie for 29th, their best showing since 1995. Scoring points for the ASU men were Marcus Brunson (2nd, 60m), Dwight Phillips (2nd, Long Jump) and the 4x400 relay squad (5th). Fiona Daly scored all of the women's points, finishing fifth in the high jump.
Sun Devil Data Trackwire.com released its midseason Dandy Dozen lists, the top 12 individuals and relays in the nation in each event, and five Sun Devils made appearances: Marcus Brunson (100m), Tony Berrian (400m), Dwight Phillips (LJ), Priscilla Hein (1500m) and Fiona Daly (HJ) ... in addition, the ASU men's 4x100 and 4x400 plus the women's 4x400 were listed ... Sophomore David Burke and redshirt freshman Brandon Strong currently rank 4-5 in the Pac-10 in the 1500 meters after both posted personal bests at the Double Dual (5/1) ... senior Dawnyell Linder, ASU's top female sprinter, returned to action May 8 in Tucson after resting a stress reaction for two weeks.
Kraft-ing ASU's Program Head coach Greg Kraft brought to ASU a reputation as a tremendous program builder after taking South Carolina's men to unprecedented heights and creating a national power on the women's side during a seven-year stint in Columbia. With its program in need of a major overhaul, there was not a better man for ASU's job than the 1996 SEC Coach of the Year. ASU's eighth head coach, Kraft and assistant coaches Darryl Anderson and Walt Drenth are in their third season at ASU and have brought the program along one step at a time. 1998-99 has seen some of the first fruits of their labor. ASU's cross country teams, under Drenth's direction, had their best-ever conference finishes (fourth) and the women made the Sun Devils first-ever NCAA Chamionship appearance as a team, finishing 23rd. During the indoor season, ASU had its best NCAA Chamionship finish on the men's side (11th) and the women's 29th-place finish was their best since 1995.
