TEMPE, Ariz.—Former Arizona State track and field’s sprinter and Tokyo Olympian Henry Carr passed away last Friday, May 29. He was 73 years old.

Inducted into the ASU Hall of Fame in 1975, Carr won two gold medals in the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. He won the 200m dash and also anchored the world record-setting 4x400m relay team with Ollan Cassell, Mike Larrabee, and Sun Devil teammate Ulis Williams.

At ASU, Carr won the NCAA title in the 220 yard dash in 1963, and earned an additional All-America accolade in the 100y dash. That same year, Carr won WAC titles in the 100y dash, the 200y dash, and as part of the 4x110y and mile relays. In 1964, Carr defended both his WAC titles in the 100y and 220y dash events.

Carr ran the No. 2 time in the Arizona State record book in the 200m, 20.33, in 1964, and in 1963 was part of the 4x400m relay team that sits at No. 10 in the ASU record book with a time of 3:03.43. Carr and his relay teammates, Mike Barrick, Ron Freeman, and Ulis Williams, were welcomed back to Tempe as the 1981 Sun Angel Track Classic Meet Honorees.

Following his track and field career, Carr was drafted in the NFL in the fourth round of the 1964 draft and played for the New York Giants from 1965-1967.
