March 10, 2000

TEMPE, Ariz. - Several Arizona State divers find themselves in contention for NCAA Championship births following the first day of competition at the Zone E Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

On the women's side, senior Katrina Pfeuffer took a step towards returning to the national championships for the first time since 1997 by placing third in one-meter competition with a score of 394.20. The next highest Sun Devil finisher was senior Mandy Contreras in the 18th position (334.15).

In men's action, 1999 NCAA Championship participant Allan Sonkin notched a sixth place showing of 467.70 points on the three-meter springboard. The senior was followed by junior teammate Marc Briggs, who finished ninth with a 462.05 performance.

The Zone E Championships conclude Saturday with the women's three-meter and men's one-meter events, as well as platform competition for both sexes. Results from all three events are combined to determine the top eight female and top five male overall finishers, who will then advance to the NCAA Championships where they will compete against qualifiers from other Zones.
