ASU Blanks Grand Canyon

August 29, 1998

TEMPE, Ariz. - First came the Monsoon storms, then came the offense storm by Arizona State's Karine Inoue. The sophomore forward tallied her first hat trick as the Sun Devils shutout crosstown foe Grand Canyon, 4-0 in an exhibition match late Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Field.

In the 23rd minute, ASU posted its first goal by sophomore Jaclyn Clark with an assist from Inoue. Clark, the Sun Devils leading goal scorer last season, blasted the shot about 10-yards out from the left side of the keeper.

Inoue, a native of Laguna Hills, Calif., recorded her first unassisted score at the 32nd minute for the 2-0 lead. At the 68th minute of the second half, Inoue launched another shot, again scoring unassisted, as she got lose behind the Antelopes defense. Inoue finished the scoring, as well as earning her hat trick, in the 85th minute with an assist from sophomore Melissa Reynolds.

Inoue had a chance for a fourth goal on a breakaway attempt, but GCU's goalkeeper Lauri Amuso made an excellent kick save.

The Sun Devils outshot the Antelopes 22-5.

Arizona State will open regular-season action on Tuesday, September 1 as they travel to Flagstaff to face Northern Arizona University.
