Arollo, Frerichs Head to Berkeley for Hep/Dec Portion of Pac-10 Championships

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State track and field will send sophomore Elizabeth Arollo and senior Kyle Frerichs to compete in the heptathlon and decathlon portion of the Pac-10 Championships hosted by Cal in Berkeley, Calif., Saturday, May 12 through Sunday, May 13.

Frerichs is ranked seventh among conference competitors with his personal best point total of 6,558 in the decathlon. Arollo, making her second straight heptathlon appearance at the Pac-10 Championships, is ranked 10th in the conference with her season-best of 4,332.

Frerichs and Arollo qualified for the conference meet at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, with Frerichs taking third in the decathlon (6558 pts.) and Arollo finishing eighth in the heptathlon (4332 pts.). Last year at the conference meet in Eugene, Ore., Arollo notched her personal best (4427 pts.) with an eighth place finish.

Next weekend the rest of the ASU track and field squad heads to Berkeley, Calif., and Cal's Edwards Stadium for the Pac-10 Championships Saturday, May 19 through Sunday, May 20.

Following their sweep of in-state rivals Arizona and NAU last weekend, Arizona State's track and field squads broke into the national rankings this week, with the men tied for 12th and the women tied for 21st according the latest Trackwire.com poll released May 8.

The Sun Devil men, ranked for just the second time during the outdoor season, are joined by USC and Texas A&M in the 12th position with 20 points. ASU's women, making their first appearance in the poll since the end of the indoor season, are tied for 21st with Missouri and Mississippi with 13 points. The Trackwire.com poll is intended to project the outcome of the NCAA Championships.

In the USTCA Team-Power Rankings as of May 9, the ASU women are ranked fourth while the men are ranked seventh. The Team Power Rankings are configured with a point system based on quality of athletic performance, team depth and dual meet scoring potential.
