Aguilera Named Second-Team Academic All-American; 19 Sun Devils Selected to Pac-10 All-Academic T&F Team

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State junior Lisa Aguilera was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America second-team for women's track and field and cross country, College Sports Information Directors announced today. Aguilera was also one of 19 Sun Devils selected to the 2002 Pac-10 All-Academic teams for track and field, announced today as well by conference commissioner Tom Hansen.

Aguilera, a junior from Peoria, Ariz., has a 3.49 GPA in computer engineering and finance. It is the third Academic All-America certificate for Aguilera who was a first-team selection for the women's fall at-large team in 2000 and a third-team selection for the women's spring at-large team in 2001. This year marks the first year track and field/cross country has its own Academic All-America teams.

To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, student-athletes must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA, be in their second season at their current school and be a starter or important reserve. Athletes eligible for All-America honors are first selected to the All-District first-teams.

Aguilera was also named to the 2002 Pac-10 All-Academic second-team for track and field, the conference announced today. Also on the women's side, senior Olivia Mazzaglia earned first-team honors with a 3.93 GPA in journalism, while junior Brianna Torres joined Aguilera on the second-team with a 3.43 GPA in English.

Earning honorable mention honors were sophomore Alvina Begay, senior Candi Criscione, sophomore Jen Hurbis, junior Kristin McFerron and senior Nicole Simmons. On the men's side, junior Justin Owen earned first-team honors with a 3.77 GPA in finance, while junior J.R. Cox (3.54, Marketing), senior Cheyne Jones (3.40, Exercise Science) and junior Jeremy Rasmussen (3.37, Computer Information Systems) were second-team selections.

Earning honorable mention honors were junior Kris Alexander, junior Fasil Bizuneh, freshman Jeff Dodge, sophomore Dan Maher, junior Vince Mosca, freshman Juan Reyes and senior Brandon Strong.

To be eligible for selection to the Pac-10 academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
