Adria Engel's Run Through The NCAA Tennis Tournament Comes To An End

May 24, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State women's tennis player Adria Engel saw her tremendous run through the NCAA tennis tournament come to an end today in the quarterfinals against the tournament's top seed and nation's top player Laura Granville of Stanford, 6-4, 6-2 in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Engel, the tournament's fifth seed and sixth-ranked player in the country, suffered her fourth straight loss to Granville this year. Engel had won a remarkable 28 of her last 31 matches this year with the three losses all coming against Granville.

The sophomore All-American from Glen Ellyn, Illinois also set ASU's single season record for most wins in a season as she finished the year with a 32-8 mark.

In addition, the quarterfinal appearance by Engel also marked the furthest an ASU player advanced into the tournament since Sheri Norris reached the semifinals in 1986.
