38-Year-Old High Jump Record Goes Down At Duel In The Desert

TEMPE, Ariz.— Arizona State’s 38-year-old school record in the high jump was surpassed on Saturday when redshirt senior Bryan McBride cleared 2.30m (7-6.50) as the Sun Devils hosted the 2015 Duel In The Desert at Sun Angel Stadium.

“It’s a broken record almost, Bryan McBride, jumping 2.30m, 7.51m in the long jump, taking second in the triple jump, Shelby Houlihan having an outstanding double in the 1500m and the 3000m,” Director of Track and Field Greg Kraft said. “But for our team, Jamol James was a big deal today. 10.15 is a big deal. We have to be more than our stars, and today we really were.”

A local product out of Peoria, Ariz., McBride, cleared the best bar in program history to close out his home meet career, making it on his second attempt, and then decided to close out his day with the make. Kyle Arney set the original record in 1977 at 2.29m (7-6.00), which McBride matched last week at the Drake Relays.

The school record performance and the rest of the 2015 Duel In the Desert will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks on Sunday at 4 p.m. PT. The ASU women defeated the Arizona women, 84-79, while the ASU men bested the Wildcat men, 92-71.

McBride also won the long jump with an outdoor personal best of 7.51m (24-7.75) and took second in the triple jump at an outdoor best 15.47m (50-9.25).

Also in the high jump, senior Edmond Baker cleared back-to-back personal bests as he finished his day at 2.18m (7-1.75), the new No. 9 in the Sun Devils’ outdoor record book.

Junior Jamol James moved to a tie for No. 2 in the ASU outdoor record book as he won the 100m dash in a personal best 10.15. James also won the 200m dash with a personal best 20.96.

Also in the 100m dash, junior Isiah Underwood set a personal best at 10.61, for third, while senior Connor McCarthy placed fourth at 10.69. Junior Ben Trotter took fifth with a personal best 10.70, and senior Kyle Middlebrooks took sixth with a personal best 10.81.

Senior Shelby Houlihan picked up a pair of wins in the 1500m and 3000m, taking the first race in 4:20.85. In the 3000m, Houlihan moved to No. 5 in the ASU outdoor record book at 9:28.94.

In the men’s triple jump, junior Josh Dixon won with a season best 15.61m (51-2.75), while sophomore Keyasia Tibbs won the women’s event at 12.11m (39-8.75).

ASU went 1-2-3 in the women’s shot put, redshirt senior Alex Hartig setting a new personal best at 16.66m (54-8.00), while redshirt freshman Magdalyn Ewen took second with a new best at 16.33m (53-7.00).

Ewen also won the women’s hammer at a new best at 60.54m (198-07), redshirt senior Jessika Byrd taking second at a season best 60.46m (198-04). Junior Ginger Jarchow set a personal best at 58.53m (192-00), while redshirt sophomore Ashley Weber threw a new best at 56.99m (187-00).

Additionally, Hartig threw a season best 46.40m (152-03) to win the women’s javelin. On the men’s side, redshirt junior Cody Moore set a new personal best at 44.07m (144-07), taking third and earning a point toward the men’s team total.

On the men’s side of the throws, junior Ahmed Hassan led ASU with a shot put personal best 18.55m (60-10.50), for second overall, while redshirt sophomore Thomas Anderson followed with a new best at 18.48m (60-7.75). Redshirt senior Kyle Lillie threw a personal best 18.42m (60-5.25), while redshirt sophomore Kyle Long tied his personal best at 16.85m (55-3.00).

Lillie also set a new best in the hammer at 61.86m (202-11), good to win the event, while Long added a team point with his throw of 59.77m (196-01).

The men’s 4x400m relay team knocked almost four seconds off their season best as the team of Moore, Hall, Julian, and Winston ran 3:11.92. The men’s 4x100m team of James, Underwood, Middlebrooks, and Hall tied their season best with a finish at 40.13.

The Sun Devils will next compete at the 2015 Pac-12 Championships, May 9-10 and 16-17, in Los Angeles, Calif., hosted by UCLA.

Quotes
More from Director of Track and Field Greg Kraft
“It’s also the guys who were second, Ryan Herson paced the 1500m, our guys tried to drag Collins Kibet in the 800m. They knew Kibet is really talented, but they made it tough for him to come back in the 800m.”

“Our kids did a really nice job, and I’m extremely proud of how they competed. The throwers were solid, we take for granted the job Coach Dumble does. Everybody did a wonderful job.”

Sprints Coach Ronnie Williams
“In the men’s sprint group, one of the things we talk about all outdoor season is that we’ve been working to get everyone on the same page, get everybody healthy and in the position to put together their best performances. Today was one of the first times we had the opportunity to put everybody on the track, and for me as a coach, it was very exciting to see everybody have some season bests and great season openers.”

“In the case of Jamol James, it’s an ongoing process. For him to come out and run a wind legal personal best was tremendous. Judging from what he ran earlier this season, we really just came back and emphasized execution in the races and kept our composure. We know we have to put in quality work before we can have these performances on the track. He went back, did his homework, watched a lot of film, and put together a phenomenal performance on the track. His execution was great today, and his time reflected that.”

Senior Edmond Baker (High Jump PR at 2.18m)
“It has been a very, very long road. I thank god every day for the opportunity to do this, and thank Bryan McBride for being such a great training partner and friend. That’s really all it is, good energy, a good training partner, and prayer. That’s what it’s been about.”

Redshirt Senior Bryan McBride (High Jump School Record at 2.30m)
“I don’t have the words for it right now. It’s such a good feeling to be chasing something for so long and then come so close meet after meet after meet, and finally I broke loose on probably the most important meet to me, my last meet at home, with my whole team behind me. Having Edmond Baker, and having us be the duo story in the high jump is a whole other ball game as far as how it allows me to compete, how it allows me to focus, and to stay the best person I can be. It’s been a blessing to compete beside him for all these years, and especially end the way we did.”

“As cliché as it sounds, it’s not going to take much more to do this, have these performances on the road in the championship part of our season. We have to stay consistent, stay calm. The jump shouldn’t be different, the way you go about it shouldn’t be different. It should just be the same whether we’re at home or on the road.”

Redshirt Senior Kyle Lillie (PR in hammer and shot put)
“It feels really good to PR in the hammer the way I did, having five of my six throws over my old best. It’s amazing. I think it’s just consistent training and working hard every day. That’s what it comes down to. Looking forward to more PRs as we go to the championship part of our season, and I want to try to place top-5 in both my events at Pac-12s, then go to regionals and hopefully move on to NCAAs.”

Junior Jamol James (PR in 100m dash and 200m dash)
“I just believed in myself a little bit more and was a little more patient today, because that’s been my thing since I’ve started college. When I was little, I was always reminded that it’s important to be patient, and I applied that today, trusted in what I’ve been doing. Now that I’ve gotten these times, it makes me more comfortable with what I’ve been doing. It’s good to talk about it and believe in it, but when it happens, like it did today, you walk a little taller, with a bit more swag. Now it’s just repeating what I’ve done in training, doing a little more, with a little more confidence, because I know I’ve been there before.”
