Sun Devil Hockey celebrates winning Ice Breaker Tournament 10.11.25

The Arizona State Sun Devils are your
2025 Ice Breaker Tournament Champions!

TEMPE, Ariz. — No. 15 Sun Devil Hockey (2-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) claimed its first trophy of the 2025-26 campaign, capturing the Ice Breaker Tournament title in its inaugural appearance. Senior forward Cruz Lucius led the charge during the championship game at Mullett Arena, capping a thrilling 5-2 win over Alaska Fairbanks (1-3-0) with a third-period hat trick.

ASU’s special teams were the difference in a penalty-filled matchup. After converting just two of 18 power-play chances entering the weekend, the Sun Devils erupted for five power-play goals—tying a program record and flipping the momentum in their favor.

Between the pipes, goaltender Connor Hasley was steady again, turning aside 34 shots in his third start wearing Maroon and Gold. The senior netminder opened the season with a 3.46 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

The Alaska Nanooks wrapped up the 2024-25 season with a 12-14-6 record, highlighted by their 14th straight Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup title after a shootout win over Alaska Anchorage. Despite starting the year 0-5-0, the Nanooks put together a six-game unbeaten streak that included victories over ranked opponents Notre Dame, Clarkson, Union, Minnesota, and a sweep of Augustana to close their campaign on a high note.

Senior transfer Matt Hubbarde led the team with 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists), while Chase Dafoe added 17 points, a team-best five power-play goals, and 259 face-off wins.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hockey team enters a new era in the 2025-26 season under Brock Sheahan, the program’s fifth head coach, as they look to reclaim their Ice Breaker Tournament title, which they won in 2012 and 2018.

Notre Dame is coming off a 2024-25 campaign that ended with a 1-0 loss to top-seeded Michigan State in the Big Ten semifinals, a game that marked the end of Jeff Jackson’s 20-year tenure as head coach after guiding the Irish to a seventh seed in the conference tournament.

Quinnipiac University Bobcats

Celebrating their 50th anniversary and second Ice Breaker Tournament appearance, the Quinnipiac Bobcats are looking to build off a successful 2024-25 season, in which they won their fifth consecutive Cleary Cup as ECAC Hockey regular season champions. In the ECAC championships, however, they suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss in the ECAC Championship game to Cornell.

Despite struggling for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament due to a weak conference strength, Quinnipiac secured a bid and made a deep run, reaching the NCAA Regional Semifinals.

Mullett Arena, a state-of-the-art multipurpose venue on the ASU campus, opened in 2022 and has quickly become home to one of the premier college hockey experiences in the nation.

The 5,000-seat arena features two NHL-regulation ice sheets, 20 luxury suites, a spacious club lounge and premium event-level seating. Sun Devil Hockey’s home facilities span more than 8,000 square feet, including a locker room, weight room, team lounge and coaches’ offices.

Next door, the Mountain America Community Iceplex (MACI) serves as both a practice rink for ASU Hockey and its four club teams, and a public sheet for students, youth and adult programs at all levels.

And despite what many might think, Mullett Arena is named after Donald and Barbara Mullett—generous ASU benefactors—not the iconic hockey hairstyle.
