2017-18 Territorial Cup Standings

Arizona State University and University of Arizona sports teams will compete against one another in 21 common varsity intercollegiate sports during the 2017-18 academic year. For a school to be the winner of the Territorial Cup Series Trophy, it must accumulate 11 points.

  • Each sport will be worth one (1) point.
  • The point is awarded to the team that wins a season series.
    1. If the teams play once in a given season (football) then that game counts as one point.
    2. For baseball and softball, all regular season games count towards season series tally, including the non-conference games.
    3. For swimming and diving, cross country, golf, and track and field only, one point is awarded to whichever team finishes higher in the Pac-12 Championship.
  • If teams split the regular season match-ups, then each team receives a point for that sport.
  • In the event of a tie the following tie-breaker will be used: University with higher finish in the Directors' Cup Standings.
    1. In the event of a tie after the Directors' Cup Standings are used the TCS will end in a tie.
Bellow is a running recap of competitions from this season in which a Territorial Cup Point is on the line.

FOOTBALL: (Teams can earn a Territorial Cup point by winning the head to head competition)

RESULT: ASU Won, 42-30

GAME RECAP:
In a series known for wild games and unpredictable finishes, the 92nd playing of the Territorial Cup football game saw yet another chapter written into its crazy history. Arizona State used a 21-point third quarter, a blocked punt and a three-touchdown performance from quarterback Manny Wilkins to erase an early deficit and beat rival Arizona, 42-30.

A balanced offensive attack paved the way for that comeback, and heading the charge was Wilkins. The signal caller finished the day with over 190 total yards and three touchdowns.

Senior Demario Richard (later named the game's MVP and Bob Moran Player of the Game) was the one who got Arizona State's second half comeback off on the right foot with a one-yard touchdown run, taking advantage of tremendous field position after Curtis Hodges blocked a punt all the way back to the Arizona five-yard line.

The Sun Devils finished the game converting on six of their seven trips to the red zone, the lone blemish coming as Wilkins took a knee to run out the game's final seconds. The team is now 46-of-48 for the season in that category, with the other miss also coming as the team ran out the clock in last month's win over Washington.

The victory not only reclaimed the Territorial Cup for Arizona State, but also ensured the team a second place finish in the Pac-12 South.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (Point is awarded based on team finish in Pac-12 Championship)
RESULT: Arizona - 8th, Arizona State - 9th

EVENT RECAP:
In the men's Pac-12 Championship race, ASU finished ninth with 282 points and the Wildcats of Arizona took eighth.

John Reniewicki was the top-finisher for the Devils. He started out fast and was near the leaders through the first 800 meters of the meandering course.

Reniewicki finished 66th, and Erik Gonzalez took 72nd to finish as the Sun Devils' No. 2 runner for the first time this season, and score for the fifth consecutive race.

J.P. Nelson bounced back after pulling up at last weekend's regular season finale to take 76th in Springfield. Alexander Stevens and Michael Renner wrapped up the scoring in 77th and 78th, respectively.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY(Point is awarded based on team finish in Pac-12 Championship)
RESULT: Arizona - 7th, Arizona State - 9th

EVENT RECAP:
While the Sun Devils couldn't pick up the Territorial Cup point at the Pac-12 Championships when they took ninth, Chelsey Albertson proved to be a bright spot for ASU on the day.

She earned her first all-conference cross country honor when she crossed the line in 14th in a season's best 19:23.6, and the achievement was Arizona State's first all-conference honor since Shelby Houlihan won the individual title in 2014.

ASU's No. 2 was Alexis Nichols, who ran her best 6K of the season to finish 58th. Samantha Ortega and 2017 ASU Cross Country Invitational champion Courtney Lewis finished 60th and 61st, respectively, and ASU closed the book on its scoring just eight seconds later when Daan Haven crossed the line in 67th.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (Point awarded to winner of head to head match)

EVENT RECAP: The Arizona State women's soccer team put up a courageous effort, rallying from a one-goal deficit to tie the game before eventually falling to Arizona 2-1.

After being outshot 9-1 in the first half the Sun Devils (5-11-3, 2-7-2 Pac-12) fought back in the second half to post a 7-6 edge over the Wildcats (10-4-4, 7-2-2) over the final 45 minutes. Jemma Purfield (three shots) and Jazmarie Mader (two shots) combined for five shots to lead ASU while freshman Nikki Panas made five saves.

Arizona broke through in the 38th minute off a corner kick and deflected shot, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead following the first 45 minutes of play in Tucson.

The two teams would trade jabs through the opening minutes of the second half, but it would be Mader, the active career-goal scoring leader for ASU, who would make it a 1-1 game in the 68th minute of play. With the goal, Mader netted her 13th career-goal, moving her just seven goals out of the top-10 for ASU's all-time goal scoring leaders.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (Half point awarded for each regular season contest)

MATCH ONE RECAP: The Arizona State volleyball team fell to the Arizona Wildcats 24-26, 18-25, 22-25 at Wells Fargo Arena.

Sophomore Ivana Jeremic led the Sun Devils with 14 kills. Freshman Megan Beedie recorded her second career start for ASU and added nine kills on .750 attacking. Beedie also had two solo blocks and one block assist on the match.

Senior libero Halle Harker had 21 digs on the match. Sophomores Nicole Peterson and Shelbie Dobmeier split time at setter, recording 27 and 13 assists, respectively.

MATCH TWO RECAP: The Sun Devils battled Arizona to a four-set match but ultimately fell, 17-25, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25 at the McKale Center in Tucson.

Senior libero Halle Harker only needed 13 digs to make career history, but gave the program 31 in her final effort as a Sun Devil. This stat put her career total at 2,029 digs, placing her at No. 2 all time in ASU history. During the match's second set, Harker passed standout Stephanie Preach's mark of 2,010, which she set from 2010-2013. Harker also finished in the upper echelon of the Pac-12 conference's liberos, with her 2,029 placiner her in a tie for No. 10 all-time in league history with Oregon State's Becky Defoe (2010-13).

Offensively for the Sun Devils, freshman Griere Hughes led the way with 14 kills, while sophomore Ivana Jeremic added 12 and senior Oluoma Okaro notched 10.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (Half point awarded for each regular season contest)

GAME ONE RECAP: Senior Tra Holder scored a game-high 31 points but No. 3 Arizona State dropped its first contest of the season, coming up just short in an 84-78 defeat against rival Arizona. The Sun Devils entered the evening as the nation's lone undefeated team after Villanova and TCU lost earlier in the day.

Playing in his first Territorial Cup matchup, freshman Remy Martin finished with 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. Arizona State finished the night with three scorers in double figures as Mickey Mitchell (10) joined Holder and Martin. Freshman Romello White led the team on the glass, pulling down eight rebounds in his first conference game. The Sun Devils turned the Wildcats over 16 times ASU also led in bench points (22-14) and fast-break scoring (19-12).

GAME TWO RECAP: In a meeting that featured the largest crowd at Wells Fargo Arena since 2005, the No. 17 Wildcats defeated the No.25 Sun Devils 77-70. After falling behind by 18 early in the first half, the Sun Devils rallied back from their largest deficit of the season, entering halftime down 39-38 and gaining the lead at the beginning of the second period, 41-39. With the help of a Mickey Mitchell basket, the Sun Devils went on a 7-0 sprint as Justice hit a contested three from way beyond the arc. Arizona head coach Sean Miller was forced to call a timeout.

After the break, the Wildcats settled down. Dusan Ristic and Rawle Alkins scored inside the painted area while DeAndre Ayton showcased his jumper.
Down six with just over six minutes to play, Mickey Mitchell made a hustle play that opened an opportunity for Tra Holder to hit a three. Holder sunk it and added two more on a layup that he was hacked on.

ASU tied the ballgame at 63. A clutch three from Trier and a dunk by Ayton on the next possession gave Arizona the cushion they needed.

The foes exchanged free-throws down the stretch until Sun Devils ran out game clock.

The Sun Devils' resilience was represented in the box score. The Sun Devils outscored the Wildcats in points in the paint, off turnovers, second chance and bench. Arizona's +16 rebound and +14 from the charily stripe was too much for Arizona State to handle. ASU uncharacteristically had just 12 attempts from the free-throw line.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (Half point awarded for each regular season contest)

GAME ONE RECAP: Robbi Ryan scored 14 of her career-high 24 points in the second half to help lead the Arizona State women's basketball team to a 75-50 win over Arizona in the first of the back-to back Territorial Cup Series games.

The Sun Devils outscored the Wildcats 25-5 in the third quarter to break open whatt was a four-point game at the half (27-23). ASU would go on to shoot 69 percent in the second half while outscoring the Wildcats 48-27 in the final 20 minutes.

The Sun Devils had 22 assists on their 30 field goals. Robbi Ryan led the way with nine assists while Courtney Ekmark (six assists, 17 points) and Bre'yanna Sanders (four assists) both posted career high numbers.

On the defensive end, the Sun Devils scored a season-high 32 points off of the 23 turnovers they forced. Ekmark's career-high five steals helped the Sun Devils total 13 steals for the game.

GAME TWO RECAP:  Kianna Ibis (14 points), Jamie Ruden (12 points) and Courtney Ekmark (11 points) combined to score 37 points to help lead the Arizona State women's basketball team to a wire-to-wire 69-45 win over Arizona.

Robbi Ryan had nine points, while Charnea Johnson-Chapman had eight points for the Sun Devils, who shot 45 percent for the game while limiting Arizona (6-21, 2-14) to only 38 percent.

With Ryan leading the way on the glass, the Sun Devils nearly doubled up the Wildcats in total rebounds, 40-22. Ekmark (seven rebounds), Charnea Johnson-Chapman and Sophia Elenga (six rebounds each) were also big contributors for the Sun Devils on the boards.

ASU led by as many as seven in the first quarter and would take its first double-digit lead after Ekmark's 3-pointer gave the Sun Devils a 27-17 advantage a little more than four minutes into the second quarter. Ruden scored eight of her 12 points in the second period to help give ASU a 35-24 lead at the half.

The Sun Devils were never seriously threatened in the second half as the Wildcats got no closer than 10 points in the third quarter. They extended their lead to 22 points after Johnson-Chapman's layup put ASU up 61-39 with 6:54 remaining.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (Pac-12 Championship Highest Finisher)

MEET RECAP With a third-place finish at the 2018 Women's Swimming & Men's/Women's Diving Pac-12 Championships, the No. 22 Sun Devil women's swim/dive team finished third and, in turn, captured a Territorial Cup Series® point by finishing ahead of Arizona in fifth. A third-place finish and 996 team points was the highest for the Sun Devils since finishing second (1186) in 1994.

Senior Mara Aiacoboae scored key points by defending her Pac-12 title in the platform dive (327.25), improving upon her second-place finish in the earlier prelims. Prior to Aiacoboae, the last Sun Devil to earn back-to-back women's platform titles was Trish Tumlinson (2004/2005). Aiacoboae's score was also the third-best to win a women's platform title since Tumlinson's back-to-back titles.

Chloe Isleta also set her third and fourth school records of the weekend – both in the 200 back – shaving .28 off her prelim time in the finals.

Silja Kansakoski took the top seed into the 200 breast finals, also joined by teammate Marlies Ross in the A final, finishing fourth and eighth, respectively. Nora Deleske (13th) and Kaya Philapil (15th, PR) also recorded top-15 finishes for a big event for the Sun Devils.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (Pac-12 Championship Highest Finisher)

MEET RECAP: Throughout the Pac-12 Men's Championships, the No. 8 Sun Devils recorded several impressive times and captured the Territorial Cup Series® poin, finishing ahead of Arizona in the standings, to tie the overall race, 6-6. Despite the Wildcats finishing ahead in the final event, the 400-free relay, the Sun Devils had built enough of a lead to finish ahead, 391-387, and capture the T-Cup point.

After defending his 200 free title on Friday, Cameron Craig earned his second individual and third overall podium finish of the weekend, taking third in the 100 free.

The Sun Devils scored two in the 200 breast with Christian Lorenz finishing just off the podium in fourth and Jack Dalmolin finishing eighth. Dalmolin set a personal record earlier in the event's prelims as he and Lorenz finished fourth and fifth.

WOMEN'S GOLF (Pac-12 Championship highest finisher)

TOURNAMENT RECAP: With the third-lowest team score of the day, No. 11 Sun Devil women's golf finished fifth at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships, improving one place from a season ago in which they went on to win the NCAA Regional and National Championship.

Olivia Mehaffey earned the Sun Devils' highest finish (T5), shooting a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish 2-under for the tournament, and earned First Team All-Conference honors.

Raquel Olmos shot a four-under 68 on Tuesday, a new collegiate low, while Madison Kerley finished just outside the top-25 in sole possession of 26th. Olmos' seven birdies helped her tie for the lowest score of the final round.

No. 1 UCLA won their second consecutive championship while No. 6 USC finished second and No. 9 Arizona and No. 4 Stanford tied for third. Individually, Patty Tavatanakit won a one-hole playoff vs. her own teammate, Lilia Vu, for the championship.

MEN'S GOLF (Pac-12 Championship highest finisher)

TOURNAMENT RECAP: The @SunDevilMGolf team couldn't sustain its Tuesday momentum in the final round of the Pac-12 Championship Wednesday, but something great came out of the trip to the Rolling Hills Country Club (Par 71/7,130 yards) in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.

Freshman Koichiro Ishika closed out a stellar championship with a 2-under 69 and finished at 11-under 273 (69-69-66-69) with 19 birdies (tied for fourth) and was 7-under on the par-4 holes. He entered the tournament with seven rounds in the 60s, he left with 11. He was one of only five players to shoot 69 or better in each of the four rounds and was easily the best freshman finisher.

USC won their first Pac-12 golf title since 2011 and 20th overall as breezy conditions kept scores in check for most of the day. The Trojans managed to post a 4-under for the final round to finish at 31-under par, four strokes ahead of second-place Colorado (27-under) and eight strokes clear of third-place ASU (23-under). The Trojans are the first team to host and win the Pac-12 Championships since Washington in 2009. Junior Justin Suh of USC won the individual title at 16-under 268 (68-64-65-71).

A Territorial Cup® Series point is on the line at every men's golf Pac-12 championship, as the Sun Devil have now finished better than Arizona in 12 of the past 14 Pac-12 men's golf championships, missing a Territorial Cup point only in 2011 and 2012.

BASEBALL (All head-to-head games, including non-conference (best of 3))

GAME ONE RECAPSpencer Torkelson launched his 23rd home run of the season, but defensive miscues late in the game would lead to a tough 6-4 loss for Sun Devil Baseball on the road at Arizona on Thursday night in Tucson, Ariz.

Torkelson's two run shot in the fifth inning gave the Sun Devils a chance as the freshman recorded his team-leading 13th multi-RBI game of the season and reached base for a team-best 34th consecutive game.  With the home run, Torkelson again stands alone in first place in the NCAA this season with 23 home runs.

Hunter Jump and Lyle Lin also added two hits in the game and Carter Aldrete had two RBIs, but it was the tough plays on defense that undid the Sun Devils.

Chaz Montoya took the tough loss in relief, though the game-winning run proved to be unearned and did not come while Montoya was on the mound. The sophomore went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and no walks with two hits allowed in an otherwise solid performance from the bullpen.

Arizona State didn't have a baserunner through the first three innings of the game and it took until the fourth inning for ASU to get a hit on the board with Jump leading off the frame with a double.

Arizona intentionally walked Canning to the free base with one out and followed that with a Lyle Lin walk to load the bases with one out for Aldrete. The sophomore delivered on a full-pitch count, lacing one into center to bring across two and give ASU the early 2-0 lead.

Some shoddy defense in the bottom half of the frame led to four UA double but ASU largely limited the damage with just three runs allowed in the frame to remain within striking distance, trailing 3-2 at the end of the frame.

That set the table for Torkelson in the fifth, who tagged Wildcat starter Cody Deason for just his second home run allowed all season, this one coming on a two-run moonshot that scored Drew Swift as well and put ASU back up, 4-3.

The defensive miscues again reared their ugly head in the bottom of the seventh inning, however, as a pair of Sun Devil errors led to a trio of Wildcat runs to put Arizona up 6-4 – a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the final two innings.

GAME TWO RECAPHunter Bishop recorded five RBIs, Spencer Torkelson hit another home run and the Sun Devil bullpen threw 6.1 scoreless innings of relief as Arizona State defeated Arizona, 10-5, on Friday night in Tucson.

Bishop had the game of his life, recording two bases-loaded hits en route to the first five-RBI game for a Sun Devil this season and the first of his career.

Torkelson did Torkelson things, launching his nation-leading 24th home run. He became the first Pac-12 player to hit 24 home runs in a season since Arizona's Shelly Duncan in 2001 and he is now tied for 13th in Pac-12 single season history.

The ninth-inning dinger gave him a two-home run lead for the national lead as he climbs within two of the NCAA freshman record of 26, set by Todd Greene of Georgia Southern in 1990.

Gage Canning notched a home run himself, his ninth of the season as he came within one home run of becoming the first NCAA player since 2010 to have double digit doubles, triples and home runs. Only 14 other players have accomplished the feat since 1989 and Canning would be the first player from a Power Five school to accomplish the feat since Nomar Garciaparra did so for Georgia Tech in 1994.

ASU got 6.1 solid innings of relief from its bullpen, with Connor Higgins gets ASU out of a huge jam in the fourth inning and going on to earn his second win of the season. Higgins pitched 2.2 innings of hitless and scoreless relief before giving way to Brady Corrigan. The freshman went 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit with a strikeout to earn his first career save.

Canning led the scoring off right out the gates, launching a two-run solo shot to right center in the top of the first to give ASU an early 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats responded with a run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to tie things up before but issued three free passes to the Sun Devils to lead off the second inning and Bishop bade them pay. Bishop ripped a long foul ball before turn one and sending it to opposite left center field, a base-clearing double that scored three runs and made it 5-1 after Bishop scored on a sac fly.

Arizona was up to task in the bottom of the third, however, taking advantage of some free passes of its own to throw up four runs to things up a 4-4 after three.

The Wildcats would threaten in the bottom of the fifth, putting two runners in scoring position with just one out but Higgins entered the game to shut things down with a big strikeout followed by a groundout to escape the frame unscathed.

ASU, despite having five runs early, had just two hits through the first five innings of the game before the bats came alive again in the sixth. Canning led the frame off with a leadoff triple – his 11th of the season – and scored on Carter Aldrete's chopper through the right side to go back on top, 6-5.

Alika Williams added a hit of his own and Gage Workman walked to load the bases for Bishop yet again and the sophomore delivered with a two-RBI laser to center field to give ASU a three-run advantage at 8-5.

Torkelson gave ASU the insurance it would need in the top of the ninth as the freshman launched his 24th home run of the season, another moonshot over the wall in left field to give Corrigan a five-run lead as the fellow freshman earned the first save of his career.

GAME THREE RECAP Hunter Bishop homered twice and Spencer Torkelson notched his 25th big fly of the year, but Sun Devil Baseball dropped the rubber match in the series against rival Arizona, 10-9, in 11 innings on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.

The exciting back and forth affair had plenty of fireworks, as Bishop continued what had been an already impressive weekend with the first multi-home run game of his career. The sophomore had a solo shot early on and then a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh, the latter of which cleared the batter's eye in center field.

With the weekend's effort, Bishop finished with eight RBIs in the team's three games while adding a pair of doubles and scoring three runs.

Bishop, Carter Aldrete and Hunter Jump all finished with three hits in the game. ASU's bullpen was solid again, not allowing a single earned run in 7.0 innings of relief. ASU was undid again, however, by three defensive errors that led to the final four unearned runs of the game.

Torkelson continued his historic freshman season as his three-run home run in the fourth inning gave him 25 on the season – extending the ASU and Pac-12 freshman records and moving within one home run of the NCAA freshman record of 26 set by Todd Greene in 1990.

The frosh became the first Pac-12 player to reach 25 home runs since fellow Sun Devil Mitch Jones set a ASU school record with 27 in 2000. Torkelson is now tied for 11th in Pac-12 history for single season home runs. Saturday's homer also extended his NCAA lead in the category to two home runs. No freshman in NCAA history has ever led the country in home runs.

The two teams traded runs from the onset of the game, with ASU taking a quick 2-0 lead in the first just to have Arizona answer in the bottom of the frame.

ASU went up against in the second on an Alika Williams sac fly to make it 3-2 and opened things up in the fourth with Bishop's solo shot followed by a three-run bomb from Torkelson to make it 7-2.

The Wildcats stormed back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-6 before tying it against in the sixth inning on an unearned run.

ASU immediately went back on top, however, behind Bishop's second home run of the game. The two-out shout gave ASU a 9-7 advantage that was again wiped out in the bottom half of the frame after two Wildcats scored following a dropped fly ball that would have ended the inning.

The pitching staffs locked in to trade zeroes over the next three innings, though ASU loaded the bases twice in the team's final four plate appearances and couldn't bring the go-ahead run across.

The Wildcats would eventually take advantage in the bottom of the 11th, scoring of a fielding error to right field to earn the walk-off victory.

The ASU bullpen did its part to keep ASU in the game, however with Brady Corrigan going 3.1 innings after a solid outing last night, allowing no earned runs in his longest appearance in over a month.

Boyd Vander Kooi saw his first extended action since the first month of the season, going 3.0 innings with three strikeouts and no earned runs to keep ASU alive in the latter stages of the game, despite taking the tough-luck loss on an unearned run.

SOFTBALL (All head-to-head games, including non-conference (best of 3))

GAME ONE RECAP:  First baseman Danielle Gibson's walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh led the No. 8 Arizona State softball team (35-7, 9-4 Pac-12) to a 2-1 win over the No. 13 Arizona Wildcats in the first game of the three-game series for the coveted Territorial Cup Series point.

The Freshmen of the Year candidate's walk-off accounts for the first walk-off victory of the season for the Sun Devil squad. With that double Gibson currently has a seven-game hitting streak, just shy of her career record 10-game streak.

The Wildcats got things started early with a solo homerun via Ashleigh Hughes in the top of the first. The next two innings remained scoreless before Kindra Hackbarth blasted one to right field in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at one apiece. The homer from K. Hackbarth was her second of the season, and could not have come in a bigger spot.

Lefty G Juarez stayed dominant in the circle all night, striking out 13 Wildcat batters and keeping them scoreless for the remainder of the game. Juarez moved to No. 12 all-time in the Sun Devil record books for single season strikeouts, with 236 thus far.

Following a shutdown inning from Juarez in the top of the seventh, the Wildcat pitching staff walked Morgan Howe with just one out in the inning to bring Gibson to the plate. The freshman drilled her 11th- double of the season to plate Howe and send a sold-out Farrington stadium home with a walk-off win in game one.

Welp. That didn't take long ??

GAME TWO RECAP: The eighth-ranked Sun Devil softball team (35-8, 9-5) launched their 47th- home run of the season, and played behind another strong outing from right-hander Breanna Macha, but it wasn't enough as the Sun Devils fell, 4-1, to No. 13 Arizona Saturday afternoon at Farrington Stadium.

Macha (10-5) threw a complete-game in the loss, giving up just three earned runs on eight hits in her 21st- appearance so far this season. The right-hander struck out four Wildcat hitters and allowed three walks on the day.

The two teams traded jabs early, but neither side could scratch in a run until the Wildcats connected on a three-run top of the fourth to jump out in front.

The Sun Devils would respond in the bottom of the fourth when Morgan Howe launched a lead-off homer to straightaway center to make it a 3-1 game heading into the fifth.

The Wildcats would cash in on a Sun Devil error in the top of the fifth to pull the score to the final, 4-1.

GAME THREE RECAP: The No. 8 Arizona State softball team (35-9, 9-6) battled through eight innings, but ultimately fell to No. 13 Arizona (31-13, 8-10) 4-2, dropping the Territorial Cup Series.

Left handed pitcher G Juarez (19-3) led ASU through all eight in the circle, striking out six Wildcats in the contest. On the season, Juarez has held opposing hitters to a miniscule .136 batting average while amassing 232 strikeouts, good enough to rank 12th in ASU single season history.

The Sun Devils' got things started early, when outfielder Kindra Hackbarth doubled down the infield line in the bottom of the first. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, a Jade Gortarez RBI brought her in to put ASU up 1-0 heading to the second.

Both teams were held scoreless through the next five innings, until an Arizona homer brought in two-runs in the top of the sixth to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.

The Sun Devil defense quickly retired three Wildcats in the top of the seventh before senior Marisa Stankiewicz powered one over the fence to tie things up at 2. The hit was good for the second baseman's seventh home run of the season, and marked the 68th- long ball of the season for ASU.

A Wildcat single in the top of the eighth brought in two to put Arizona up,, 4-2, heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Junior outfielder Morgan Howe laced a two-out single to right field, but the would-be Sun Devil rally would come up just short, marking a 4-2 final.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (All head-to-head matches, excluding postseason)

MATCH RECAP: The Sun Devil women's tennis team secured an important Territorial Cup Series point with a 4-2 victory over in-state Rival Arizona Saturday in Tucson.

The charge to victory got started with a dominating doubles performance on all three courts that saw the Devils make quick world of the three U of A tandems with Fossa Huergo/Klanecek sweeping on court three and No. 17 John-Baptiste/Hattingh winning 6-1 on court one. Slaysman/Kolarova were up 5-2 before the point was clinched on court one.

After taking a quick 2-0 lead in the dual-match thanks to No. 53 Lauryn John-Baptiste's 6-1, 6-2 win on court one, the Sun Devils found themselves in a dogfight with the Wildcats as four of the remaining five matches would reach three sets.

After dropping the first set 6-2, true freshman Sasa Klanecek stormed back to win the second set 6-2 to force a third. In the third set, Klanecek blanked her opponent on court five to put the Devils back up 3-2.

A few minutes later on court six, Tereza Kolarova held on and defeated Sophia Thomas 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to seal the match for ASU.

MEN'S TENNIS (All head-to-head matches, excluding postseason)

MATCH RECAP: The Arizona State men's tennis team claimed a point in the Territorial Cup Series with a 4-0 sweep over the Arizona Wildcats on senior day.

The Devils jumped on Arizona early in doubles, claiming the win on court three behind Benjamin Hannestad and William Kirkman. The duo defeated Carlos Hassey and Filip Malbasic 6-3 to claim a 3-1 record in conference play and a team-best .750 winning percentage.

Senior Michaël Geerts and Pierre Louis Dodens debuted as double partners in the rivalry matchup, clinching the opening point 7-6 (2) over Jonas Maier and Alejandro Reguant. The doubles-clinching match was a back-and-forth affair, with the Devils duo tied with the Wildcats 1-1 early on. Working up to a 5-5 tie, Geerts/Dodens powered to a 6-5 lead and easily took the tie-breaking set by a score of 7-2.

The No. 45-ranked doubles pair of Makey Rakotomalala and Andrea Bolla went unfinished after a back-and-forth battle against Igor Karpovets and Aaro Pollanen. The battle on court one was suspended in the tiebreaker 6-6.

Geerts took his late momentum all the way to singles play where he powered to a victory on court one in a little under an hour. He won in straight sets on Saturday, taking down Igor Karpovets 6-3,6-3. The 20th-ranked Geerts notched win number 14 this spring, and is a staggering 8-2 in his last 10 matchups. The Belgian cracked the ITA/Oracle top-20 this week to become the highest ranked Sun Devil since No. 1 Sargis Sargsian in 1995, who won the Devils' lone singles NCAA National Championship that year.

No. 72 Hannestad defeated Aaro Pollanen 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 and tallied his 10th win of the season. His four conference wins are a team-best, and secured a 3-0 Devils lead with four singles matches still in play on courts three through six.

Makey Rakotomalala finished off the rivals from Tucson, downing Filip Malbasic 7-6, 6-3 in a high energy matchup. Rakotomalala improved to 13-9 on the season with two match clinching victories. The Frenchman pulled out to an early first set lead 4-1, but Malbasic fought back to knot things up at four. The two came to a stalemate 6-6 and headed into a tiebreaker, with Rakotomalala coming out on top to claim the advantage. Again at a tie 3-3 in the second set, Rakotomalala scored three straight points to pull out the victory and clinch the match for the Sun Devils.

MEET RECAP: The Sun Devil women's track and field team earned the indoor Territorial Cup point Saturday in Seattle as they outscored the U of A women and finished eighth in the MPSF.

Maggie Ewen won her second title of the weekend and fourth MPSF crown in her illustrious indoor career.

She came into Saturday having never claimed the women's shot put title indoors, but also with a lead in the conference of more than five feet thanks to her 19.20m/63-0.00-foot heave that put her at third in NCAA history from earlier this season.

While she didn't need to launch the shot that far in Seattle to claim gold, Ewen still managed to break the MPSF meet and Dempsey Indoor facility records during the competition as she recorded a mark of 18.98m/62-3.25 feet.

Freshman Samantha Noennig also scored in the shot put, taking fifth and providing ASU with four more points in the event.

Shaunie Morrison improved on her championships debut a season ago when she took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles to give the Devils four team points.

The women picked up three more points when Jessica Barreira and Darreyl Woodson took seventh and eighth, respectively in the triple jump. After all of the events were scored, the Sun Devil women finished in eighth with 35 points.

Lundberg and Carballo swept their final two matches of the day, defeating Colorado Mesa's pairing before taking down toppling No. 14 Arizona's Nady & Watanabe.

The improvement of the fifth pairing of Kate Baldwin and Samantha Plaster was apparent, as the duo provided three competitive matches.
