#10 Softball Drops Game to Florida State in Extra Innings, 1-0

March 16, 2006

, - The #10 Sun Devil Softball squad looked to rebound from its earlier loss to Notre Dame as they took on Florida State (20-12) in their second game of the night, where costly errors and weak offense from the Devils cost them the game as they fell in extra innings, 1-0 sending the Devils to 28-3 overall on the season.

The game was another pitching battle between ASU's Katie Burkhart (12-1) and FSU's Tiffany McDonald, both who went the distance pitching all 10 innings with Burkhart giving up four hits and one run (unearned), with nine strikeouts, and McDonald giving up 5 hits and striking out 14 of the 35 batters she faced.

The scoreboard remained blank through nine innings with neither team able to generate any offense until the tenth inning when Veronica Wootson, who was placed on second for the international tie-break rule made it home off of a Sun Devil throwing error allowing Brittany Osmon to get to first off a sacrifice bunt.

The Devils shut down the Seminoles the rest of the inning, though two ASU strikeouts and a fly out later the game was ended with the Seminoles on top of the Devils 1-0, giving Katie Burkhart her first loss of the season with her record now standing at 12-1.

The Devils will look to rebound tomorrow when they take on the host-team, the Cal State Fullerton Titans (16-13) tomorrow at 7 p.m. in a featured game where the a Titans will honor former coach Judi Garman  and her 1986 NCAA Championship Team.
