Women's Tennis Team Downs Oregon

April 3, 1999

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Oregon women's tennis team was defeated 6-1, by the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils, in Pullman, Wash. The Ducks were swept in singles play, but managed to get a tough win in doubles. The match marked the second straight without freshman Sarah Colistro at the No. 3 position. Colistro is not playing due to a sore right knee she suffered in practice last week.

Arizona State swept the singles matches, but Oregon fought back to win the only doubles match, with the tandem of Alina Wygonowska and Janice Nyland defeating the Sun Devils' Alison Nash and Celena McCoury, 8-5.

Oregon Head Coach Jack Griffin felt the team played better than they did yesterday against Arizona. "We played well, but Arizona State has some great players. They could win a national championship this year. We played decent in every spot. If we continue to play with the spirit and effort we had today, we'll beat some top teams."

The Ducks have now lost four in a row since becoming ranked 31st in the country. The loss drops Oregon to 9-7 overall and 0-5 in the Pac-10. Up next, the Ducks will face Boise State, Sunday April 4, in Pullman, Wash.
