Women's Soccer Shuts Out Arch-Rival Arizona

October 16, 1998

TEMPE, Ariz. - A steady flurry of shots by the Arizona State women's soccer team (6-7-0, 2-1-0 Pac-10) eventually overwhelmed arch-rival Arizona (3-7-1, 0-3-0 Pac-10) by a score of 2-0 at the Sun Devil Soccer Field in Tempe, Arizona.

ASU outshot Arizona 21-9. The Sun Devils were led by freshman midfielder Stacey Tullock, who tallied seven shots and was credited with an assist on each of ASU's goals.

Arizona keeper Inger Airheart held off the Sun Devil attack as long as she could, posting eight saves, but in the 70th minute, Sun Devil forward Jennifer Peterson broke the scoreless deadlock with a 25-yard rocket from straight up the field. The Sun Devils scored again in the 76th minute when forward Karine Inoue took a high flip-throw in from Tullock and headed it past Airheart for the final score of the game.

With the victory, Arizona State extends its unbeaten streak against Arizona to 4-0.

Arizona State returns to Sun Devil Soccer Field on October 23 to face the Washington State Cougars. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
