ON TAP: The Arizona State soccer team (2-3-0) will begin its 1998 home slate this Friday as they take on 21st-ranked San Diego State (4-1-0) at 7 p.m. ASU will conclude its first homestand, hosting Utah State (2-3-0) on Sunday with a scheduled start of 1 p.m. As in the past two seasons, all home matches will be played at Sun Devil Soccer Field, located on the corner of Rural and Sixth street behind the band practice field.
LAST TIME OUT: An injury-plagued Arizona State team dropped both games at the Wisconsin Invitational, falling 3-2 to Marquette and 3-1 to ninth-ranked Texas A&M. Against Marquette, ASU tied the game six minutes into the second half when Karine Inoue, on a nice one-on-one move, beat the defender and the keeper. But the Golden Eagles tallied the winning goal in the 67th minute for the win. Freshman Kristina Dawson, making her first career start, scored ASU's first goal in the 26th minute. Despite outshooting Texas A&M, the Sun Devils could not find the net as several new players tried to get adjusted to one another. Freshman Stacey Tullock posted the lone goal as she took a quick pass from Inoue, blasting the shot pass the Aggie keeper off the far post. A&M sealed the win with a penalty kick in the 77th minute.
NOTES ON SAN DIEGO STATE: The Aztecs have shutout three other Pac-10 schools to forge into the top-25: USC 2-0, UCLA 1-0, California 2-0 ... four different players have scored a game-winning goal ... SDSU's top scorer, forward Lori LaCoursiere, has seven points (3G/1A) ... goalkeeper Katherine Judkins has logged 442 minutes, allowed four goals, made 15 saves, while posting three shutouts ... this is the second meeting between ASU and SDSU with Aztecs winning the first match in '96.
NOTES ON UTAH STATE: Sophomore forward Jayme Gordy leads the team in points (6), goals (3) and shots (17) ... junior keeper Hyer Mackenzie has played in four games, allowing five goals for a 1.42 GAA ... ASU defeated Utah St., 6-2 last year in Logan ... the Aggies have been outshot 75-58.
INJURED DEVILS: In addition to All-Pac-10 performer Antoinette Marjanovic absence for the season, four other ASU players have seen little or no time during the past week. Forwards Jennifer Peterson (quad) and Jaclyn Clark (knee), midfielder Erin McGinnis (ankle) and defender Shanel Scott (hip) have been hampered, and are all questionable for this weekend's matches.
TWO EARN HONORS: Midfielder Stacey Tullock and forward Karine Inoue were named to the Wisconsin Invitational All-Tournament Team. Tullock scored ASU's only goal against Texas A&M, while Inoue posted a goal and an assist against Marquette, as well as assisting on Tullock's goal against A&M.
TEAM HONORS: In only the team's third year of Division I competition, Arizona State's 1998 recruiting class was ranked 22nd in the country and sixth in the West Region by Soccer Buzz.
FRESHMEN OF INFLUENCE: True freshman Kristina Dawson and redshirt freshman Stacey Tullock have certainly made there presents known early in the season. Tullock leads the team in shots (20), goals (3) and is second in scoring with eight points. Dawson has tallied two goals on five shots and is fourth on the team in points with four.
