TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State soccer team (2-5-0) dropped its fifth straight match to Utah State (3-4-0), 3-1 today at Sun Devil Soccer Field.
The Aggies got on the board first in the eighth minute as forward Courtney Stephens scored on a breakaway. ASU would tie the match in the 11th minute when Stacey Tullock blazed a shot pass the Aggie keeper off a double assist from Melissa Reynolds and Kerrie Kulak.
However, just one minute later, Utah State went ahead 2-1 as Stephens scored again, this time off of a rebound from ASU keeper Kristin Slater. The Aggie's would score once more before the half at the 19th minute mark. Jamey Gordy lofted a shot over the Sun Devil's keeper head with an assist from Emily Sutherland.
In the second half, ASU had a chance to pull within a goal when Aisha Thomas kicked the ball wide of an open net. Despite playing without injured starting forwards Jennifer Peterson, Jaclyn Clark and Karine Inoue, as well as midfielder Antionette Marjanovic, ASU outshot the Aggies 22-9. The schedule will not get any easier this week as ASU heads on its second East Coast road swing, taking on sixth-ranked William & Mary on Friday, September 25 and Old Dominion on Sunday, September 27.
