Tempe Turnaround
After just 55 games at the helm of the ASU women's basketball program, Head Coach Charli Turner Thorne has the Sun Devils heading back in the right direction. ASU had not recorded more than eight wins in a season for three straight years before Turner Thorne arrived in Tempe in June 1996. A lot has been changing since then.
In 1997-98 Turner Thorne guided ASU to:
- Its best Pac-10 start (4-5) since the 1992-93 season when it started out 5-4.
- Its most Pac-10 wins (6) in five years.
- Its largest margin of victory in a Pac-10 game (+21) since 1992-93.
- Its first back-to-back conference wins since 1995-96.
- Its first Pac-10 road win in almost three years.
- Its first season sweeps of Pac-10 teams in two years.
- Its first sweep of at least two Pac-10 teams in five years.
- One of its biggest upsets (77-76 win vs. then-No. 7 Washington).
- Its first 100-point game since the 1992-93 season (118 points vs. Long Island).
- The second-highest scoring output by a Sun Devil women's team (118 points).
A Look Back at 1997-98
In Charli Turner Thorne's second season at the helm, the Sun Devils went 10-17 (6-12 Pac-10/T7th), achieving their most overall and conference wins in five years.
Despite costly injuries to reserve guard Ebony Edwards (torn ACL) and starting forward Jennifer Bennett (stress fracture) in December, ASU ended the preseason slate on a high note, taking then-No. 23 Auburn down to the wire and defeating Oklahoma at home.
Picked to finish ninth in the conference race in a preseason poll of Pac-10 media, ASU spent most of the season in sixth place but ended the year on a season-high four-game losing streak to finish tied for seventh in the league. The Sun Devils fought to a 4-5 record in the first half of league play including one of their biggest upsets a victory over then-No. 7 Washington on Jan. 8. Junior Michelle Tom launched a three-pointer that drained as the buzzer sounded, giving the Sun Devils the 77-76 win and making CNN's Play's of the Day.
Injuries took an especially hard toll on the ASU backcourt in late January. Inflammatory arthritis (left knee) hindered starting point guard Rechelle Lang beginning with the Jan. 22 and 24 games at Oregon State and Oregon, respectively. Without Lang available, ASU went just 3-8 in its last 11 games but managed season sweeps of Oregon State and Washington State its first Pac-10 sweeps in two years.
