ARIZONA STATE IN THE DRAFT

TEMPE, Ariz. - A pair of Arizona State University baseball student-athletes have been selected in the initial 10 rounds of the 2013 MLB Draft.
Junior right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams was selected by the Miami Marlins with the 44th overall pick in the second round, while junior outfielder Kasey Coffman was taken by the Detroit Tigers with the 306th overall pick in the 10th round.
Williams and Coffman become the 390th and 391st, respectively, Arizona State baseball players to be drafted by the Major Leagues, which is the most all-time among NCAA schools. Former Sun Devil outfielder Rick Monday was the first-ever MLB Draft pick in 1965 when he was selected No. 1 overall by the Kansas City Athletics.
Williams, who went 6-6 this season as the Devils' Friday Night starter, boasts a 3.00 career ERA, which is tied for the sixth lowest in school history in the aluminum bat era. He went 19-8 in his three-year career, including a nation-best 12-2 his sophomore season in which he earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors as well as second team All-America recognition.
A two-time All-Conference honoree, he was named a Freshmen All-American and Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 recipient after appearing in a team-high 32 games in 2011.
Coffman was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team this season after he hit .332 with 44 RBI and a team-high 57 runs scored. He ranked second on the team in batting average, slugging percentage, hits and total bases as he collected 13 doubles, five triples and eight home runs.
He started 98 games in the outfield in his three-year career and twice earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention recognition.
Thirty-three Sun Devils have been taken in the MLB Draft in coach Esmay's four seasons at ASU, which is the most of any Div. I school in that time span and five more than the next closest team, Florida.
