MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—In a tough non-conference match-up against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Arizona State men’s and women’s swimming and diving team each fell to its Big Ten opponent in the opening dual meet of the season, Saturday, in Minneapolis, Minn. The Sun Devil women fell to the Gophers 197-94, while the men finished 190-95.
Sophomore Thibaut Capitaine, the ASU record holder in the sprint breaststroke events, won the 100-yard breast in a time of 56:31 to give ASU the first victory of the meet. In the 200-yard fly, senior Alex Coci touched in less that two-tenths of a second behind Minnesota’s Nick Orf in a time of 1:48.82.
Sophomore Morgan Weller, the Pac-12 Freshman Diver of the Year from the previous season, took first in the 1-meter event scoring a total of 295.88. Weller also won the 1-meter title at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships.
Sun Devil diving travels to Hawaii next weekend to face the Rainbow Warriors in a battle of the nation’s top diving programs. As a team, he Sun Devils return home to face UNLV on Sat. Oct. 26 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
