State Farm Insurance announced today that it has entered into a multi-year marketing agreement with the athletic departments of Arizona State University and the University of Arizona to sponsor the rivalry athletic games and a special student competition between the two esteemed universities.

The collection of games and competitions will be called The State Farm Territorial Cup Series, a named inspired by the trophy awarded to the winning football team in their annual tilt.

Each academic year points will be awarded to the winning team or school at the conclusion of 18 rivalry sports competitions or series.  The university with the most points at the end of the academic year will earn the new State Farm Territorial Cup Series Trophy in addition to bragging rights in the state.  The new series trophy is being hand crafted by Reed & Barton, a silversmith located in Massachusetts that created the original Territorial Cup Trophy back in 1899. This new trophy will be unveiled in the spring and will be ready for the 2009-2010 State Farm Territorial Cup Series champion to take home.

More importantly, State Farm will donate $20,000 to each university's education scholarship fund to help deserving students.

"In conjunction with the Rivalry, State Farm and both Universities will look to expand the competition in different ways. One such concept is an "ASU/UA Food Fight," the goal of which will ultimately be to help prevent hunger in the state of Arizona."

State Farm will be supporting their relationship with the two schools through fan promotions as well.  The first will begin today and run each week up to the rivalry football game on November 28th.  ASU and University of Arizona fans can win a pair of game tickets and an authentic autographed split design helmet each week in the State Farm Territorial Cup Sweepstakes. ASU fans can enter by texting SFASU to 25866 and Arizona fans can enter by texting SFUA to 25866.

"The aim of comprehensive sponsorship to not only spotlight athletic programs offered by each university, but also to help alleviate hunger in the community and address the reduction in educational funding  each university is currently experiencing," said State Farm Vice President-Agency Mike Dannewitz. "State Farm is proud to be a part of such a storied past of two nationally renowned universities, and we wish luck to both schools in the State Farm Territorial Cup Series."

"What makes this partnership unique is its focus on two issues central to the Arizona community in these trying times: education and hunger.  We are pleased to join with State Farm and The University of Arizona to tackle these two important challenges in a fun and spirited way," said Lisa L. Love, ASU's Vice President for University Athletics.

"The University of Arizona is proud to partner with State Farm and ASU to formalize our rivalry competitions, while simultaneously raising scholarship money for our student- athletes," said Jim Livengood, Athletic Director for the University of Arizona.

"State Farm's good neighbor tagline is more than just a slogan; it's the cornerstone for the way the company interacts with customers, their communities and with partners," said Gary Knudson President of AdSport who negotiated the agreement on behalf of State Farm: "The goal for all of us is to create and build a platform that not only recognizes outstanding athletic performances but also acknowledges excellence in the classroom and the community."

"Reed and Barton is delighted to be creating the new State Farm Territorial Cup Series Trophy", stated Sara Carcieri, VP Marketing. She continues, "It is a remarkable story that the Massachusetts based company that started as silversmiths in 1824, and manufactured the first trophy for one of the oldest college sports rivalries dating back to 1899, will be designing and manufacturing the new trophy 110 years later.

Sun Devils or Wildcats? Wildcats or Sun Devils? Arizonans have long argued over which school has the best sports teams. Now they finally have a way to settle the long-running argument.
