Sun Devils Post Most Wins in Six Years
The Arizona State women's basketball team concluded the 1998-99 season with a 12-15 overall mark, going 6-12 (T6th) in Pac-10 play and achieving its most overall wins since the 1992-93 season. Although a postseason invitation was not in the cards for the Sun Devils this year, the last two weeks of the regular season were highlighted by a five-point loss to then-No. 18 Oregon (Feb. 19) and three-point loss to eventual Elite Eight team UCLA (Mar. 4) -- indications that March Madness is just around the corner in Tempe. In fact, ASU posted wins over St. Joseph's, an 11th seed in the NCAA Tournament, and Washington, which played in the WNIT. The Sun Devils played two other NCAA qualifiers -- Arizona and Texas -- within nine points. Injury struck two of ASU's post players, Theresa Jantzen and Leah Combs, sidelining Jantzen for the non-conference season and Combs for the majority of the Pac-10 season. The Sun Devils posted a 6-3 slate in the preseason and followed that with a 6-12 mark in Pac-10 play, matching their Conference record from a year ago. ASU recorded season sweeps of Oregon State and Washington State for the second straight year and continued its home winning streak against Washington with an overtime victory Feb. 6. Arizona, a sixth seed in the NCAA Tournament, needed overtime to put the Sun Devils away on Feb. 13, ASU's record third overtime game on the season.
Jantzen Named To Pac-10 All-Freshman Team
Freshman Theresa Jantzen was named to the five-member Pac-10 All-Freshman Team, only the second Sun Devil to ever receive Pac-10 All-Freshman honors, along with Stacey Johnson in 1991-92. Despite missing the first 10 games of the season with a broken left foot, Jantzen finished the season as ASU's leading scorer (10.9 ppg), and became the first rookie to lead the Sun Devils in that category since Kym Hampton in 1980-81. Jantzen came on strong during Conference play to average 14 points and 8 rebounds in ASU's last nine games. She shot 82 percent from the charity stripe and had a streak of 22 consecutive free throws at one point.
Holt, Jantzen Named Pac-10 Honorable Mention
Junior center Rachel Holt and freshman forward Theresa Jantzen were named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention, the first such selection for both. Holt paced the Sun Devils with 15 double-figure scoring games on the season, averaging 10.3 points. She reached the 500-point plateau with 13 points Jan. 9 at Washington State and led ASU and finished seventh in the Pac-10 with a 51.4 field-goal percentage. Holt currently ranks seventh on the ASU all-time blocked shots list with 53 and needs just six more to crack the top five. The 6-foot-3 center was also named to the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament Team.
Senior Sketch: Rechelle Lang
A 5-foot-9 guard, Rechelle Lang (TeKuiti, New Zealand) played in 41 games over the last two seasons, contributing as both a point guard and shooting guard. Lang held the starting point guard assignment for the first 14 games of 1997-98, until she was sidelined with inflammatory arthritis in her right knee. She was ranked third in the Pac-10 in assists, averaging 4.3 per game when injury struck. Although her playing time was limited this year due to injury she provided her team with several boosts, draining three three-pointers against San Jose State Dec. 30 (to finish with a season-high 11 points), and dishing out a season-high five assists Feb. 4 vs. Washington State. Lang played a season-high 19 minutes in the narrow loss at UCLA Mar. 4.
Senior Sketch: Michelle Tom
Winslow native Michelle Tom's Sun Devil career has been highlighted by a knack for clutch three-point shooting, as she paced the Pac-10 in that category this season at a 42.0 percent clip. On ASU's home court, Tom seemed to have the Washington Huskies' number. Last season she sank a three-pointer at the buzzer to hand the seventh-ranked Huskies their first loss of the season, and on Feb. 6 of this year she nailed a trey with 5.1 seconds remaining to tie the game and send the teams into overtime, before the Sun Devils posted a 72-69 victory. Tom drained 48 career treys and posted a career field goal mark of 40.1 percent. Tom closed out her career with 300 career points, averaging 6.3 per game.
Senior Sketch: Kisha White
A walk-on in 1997-98 who went on start 20 games, Phoenix product Kisha White established herself as a solid rebounder while holding down the starting forward spot. She finished the season last year as ASU's second-leading rebounder with 4.4 per game. White scored a season-high 9 points at Washington this year and grabbed 7 boards vs. Stanford. She posts a career field-goal percentage of 47.0 and averaged 6.6 points per game throughout her Sun Devil career. White concluded her career just shy of the 300-point plateau, with 294 points.
Moving Forward
Since Charli Turner Thorne took over the reigns of the program in 1996-97, the Sun Devils have begun a steady climb back toward the prominence enjoyed by ASU teams in the early 1990s. After an NCAA Tournament appearance in 1991-1992 and a 17-win season in 1992-93, ASU had averaged just 2.7 conference wins and 6.7 overall wins in the three seasons before Turner Thorne was brought in. Turner Thorne guided ASU to back-to-back 10-win seasons (1997-98 & 1998-99) for the first time in six years. The Devils' sixth-place Pac-10 finish is their best in six years.

Average Attendance Tops 1,000 For 3rd Straight Year
Close to 50,000 fans watched Arizona State women's basketball games this season (48,503), the most this decade. ASU women's basketball attendance figures increased for the third straight season, with a total of 23,027 fans passing through the Wells Fargo Arena turnstiles in 1998-99. Average home attendance topped 1,000 for the third straight year (1,645) and total attendance average neared 1,800 (1,796). The Sun Devils' largest home crowd was 3,417 in its opener against Sam Houston State Nov. 21. ASU's largest road crowd was 6,979 at Oregon Feb. 19.
Sun Devil Back Court 2nd In Pac-10 Assists
ASU sophomore point guard Natalie Tucker and junior 2-guard Kitch Kitchen averaged a combined 8.4 assists per game, second in the Pac-10 to only the tandem of Arizona guards Felecity Willis and Lisa Griffith (10.3 apg). Tucker finished fourth in the Pac-10 with 4.8 apg, while Kitchen finished ninth with 3.6 apg.
Get Out The Brooms
ASU's 77-65 win over Oregon State Feb. 21 completed its second straight season sweep of the Beavers. The sweep was also the Sun Devils' second on the year after going 2-0 against Washington State, and marks the second consecutive season ASU has swept more than one Pac-10 opponent. Here's a look at the Sun Devils' year-by-year sweeps over the last eight seasons:
Year # Sweeps Pac-10 Teams 1991-92 3 Arizona, California, Oregon State 1992-93 4 Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Washington State 1993-94 1 Washington State 1994-95 -- 1995-96 1 Washington 1996-97 -- 1997-98 2 Oregon State, Washington State 1998-99 2 Oregon State, Washington State
ASU's Canadian Connection Has The Right Medicine
Freshman forward Theresa Jantzen (Medicine Hat, Alberta) averaged 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in ASU's last nine games ... Jantzen notched double-figures in scoring in 9 of ASU's last 14 games, pouring in a career-high 28 points at Oregon State Feb. 21 ... she posted 19 points and 13 boards Feb. 27 vs. Cal for her fourth double-double ... Jantzen added 24 points and 16 rebounds Feb. 13 vs. Arizona ... she earned her first start at Stanford (Jan. 30) and went on to start eight more games ... the Feb. 8 Pac-10 Player of the Week, she scored 16 points vs. WSU Feb. 4, and followed that performance with 13 points and 12 boards Feb. 6 vs. Washington ... Jantzen went a combined 11-for-11 from the line in the two contests ... she logged 15 points at Cal Jan. 28 (4-of-7 shooting) and posted a team-high 12 points against Oregon on Jan. 23 ... in her first outing of significant playing time Jan. 16 at Arizona, Jantzen showed the crowd at the McKale Center exactly why her Arizona State teammates missed her presence since their first exhibition game, notching her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 20 minutes of action ... Jantzen battled back from a fractured left foot that was discovered Nov. 5 ... she was sidelined with the injury until Jan. 5.
ASU Curbs Be-Deviling Turnover Troubles At Season's End
The Sun Devils committed a season-low 15 turnovers Feb. 21 at Oregon State and matched that mark Feb. 25 vs. Stanford -- their third and fourth Pac-10 games under the 20-mark. ASU went 5-3 when committing less than 20 turnovers on the year. ASU came into the Oregon series Feb. 19 and 21 averaging 24 turnovers in conference games, but kept its total to 18 against the Ducks. The Devils posted 19 turnovers against Oregon State Feb. 21. ASU totaled a season-high 39 at Washington on Jan. 7.
Future Only Looks Brighter for ASU
Eight of ASU's nine double-doubles on the season were recorded by Theresa Jantzen and fellow true freshman Leah Combs. Jantzen posted 19 points points and 13 rebounds against California Feb. 27 for her fourth double-double on the season. Combs posted her fourth of the season Dec. 21 at UC Irvine, while Leaf Newman added one Jan. 5 vs. UCLA.
Did You Know?
With the selection of Theresa Jantzen on Feb. 8, ASU landed two Pac-10 players of the week in the same season for the first time since 1993, when Ryneldi Becenti received two such honors. Junior Kristine Sand was also named Pac-10 Player of the Week (Dec. 7). The Sun Devils had one player earn the distinction in 1997-98 -- Michelle Tom.
It's Been A Long Time Coming...
On Feb. 8, Theresa Jantzen became the first ASU freshman to receive Pac-10 Player of the Week Honors in 11 years. The last frosh to do so was Karen O'Connor back on March 14, 1988.
Newest Addition to Sun Devil Roster Arrived Feb. 9
Arizona State head coach Charli Turner Thorne gave birth to a baby boy Feb. 9 at 3:55 a.m. at Chandler Regional Hospital. Conor Troy Thorne, the first child of Turner Thorne and husband Will Thorne, weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces. Turner Thorne returned to practice on Thursday, Feb. 11. The third-year ASU mentor coached full-time throughout her pregnancy, however, she did not travel to ASU's games at Cal and Stanford Jan. 28 and 30 as a precautionary measure.
Jantzen Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
ASU freshman forward Theresa Jantzen was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week on Feb. 8, the first ASU frosh to receive such distinction in 11 years. Jantzen averaged 14.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists and shot 11-for-11 from the free throw line in ASU's wins over Washington State (Feb. 4) and Washington (Feb. 6). The 6-foot-3 native of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, scored a then-career-high 16 points, going 5-for-6 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line, and grabbed 7 boards and dished out four assists in an 80-66 win over WSU. In the 72-69 overtime win over Washington, Jantzen made the second start of her career and responded with her second career double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing a career-best 12 boards. She scored 6 of ASU's 12 points in the final five minutes of regulation, and blocked a shot in overtime.
Down To The Wire
Including ASU's back-to-back overtime games against Washington and Arizona (Feb. 6 and 13), the Sun Devils took three opponents to "OT" this season, the most ever by an ASU squad. In fact, no Sun Devil team had ever played two overtime games in the same season prior to 1998-99.
ASU's Starting Lineups
The Sun Devils utilized four different starting lineups this season, and went 5-3 with the lineup that took the floor to open the season.
Rec. Starting Lineup 5-3: F-Newman, F-Combs, C-Holt, G-Kitchen, G-Tucker (Nov. 21-Dec. 21). 4-6: F-Newman, F-Sand, C-Holt, G-Kitchen, G-Tucker (Dec. 30-Jan. 28, Feb. 4) 0-1: F-Newman, F-Sand, C-Jantzen, G-Tom, G-Tucker (Jan. 30). 3-5: F-Newman, F-Jantzen, C-Holt, G-Kitchen, G-Tucker (Feb. 6-Mar. 6)
Sun Devils Tie School Record at Arizona
Arizona State tied a school record for the second time in 1998-99 with nine three-pointers Jan. 16 at Arizona. The Sun Devils went 9-for-22 from long range vs. the Wildcats, and were 9-of-17 against Southwestern Louisiana on Nov. 28. Draining threes at a torrid pace in Tucson, ASU made four of its treys by the 8-minute mark of the first half, with three from Michelle Tom and one from Kristine Sand. At the intermission, half of the Sun Devils' eight field goals were three-pointers.
Defending the Three
The Sun Devils paced the Pac-10 in three-point field goal percentage defense (27.1 percent) and gave up just 59 treys all season. Conversely, the Devils made more than twice as many three-pointers as their opponents (120).
Shooting The Three
Arizona State senior Michelle Tom paced the Pac-10 from three-point range, shooting at a 42.0 percent clip (29-of-69). Sophomore Leaf Newman finished the season 10th (34 percent). As a team, the Sun Devils connected on half of their treys at UC Irvine (6-of-12) Dec. 18, and tied a school record twice in 1998-99 with nine treys at Arizona (1/16/99) and vs. Southwestern Louisiana (11/28/98). ASU drained a season-high five (of nine) threes in the first half vs. Washington Feb. 6.
On The Money: Natalie Tucker
Starting point guard Natalie Tucker (Georgetown, Texas) took over the full-time role of directing the ASU offense in 1998-99 after sitting out as a Division I transfer (Texas A&M) in 1997-98 ... she averaged 4.8 apg, fourth in the Pac-10 ... the 5-foot-9 Texan posted nine games with six or more assists, including a career-high 10 vs. then-No. 10 UCLA on Jan. 5 ... Tucker put together a string of four straight games with at least eight assists from Dec. 21 (UC Santa Barbara) through Jan. 5 (UCLA), with 8 at UCSB, 8 vs. San Jose State and 9 vs. USC ... Tucker was money in the bank for ASU at the charity stripe and was ranked as high as third in the nation in free throw percentage early in the season ... she finished the season fourth in the Pac-10 at 78 percent (67-of-86) ... she made 5 of 6 FTs in an overtime win Feb. 6 vs. Washington and went 5-for-6 in the final minute to help seal the win Jan. 9 at WSU ... Tucker, who was named to the ASU Wells Fargo All-Tournament Team on Dec. 6, posted four steals three times (vs. Texas, Gonzaga and USC) ... "Nat" is the younger sister of Lana Tucker, a former All-Big 12 shooting guard at Texas A&M ('97).
Jantzen Takes Consecutive Free Throws Streak To 22
Freshman Theresa Jantzen had her consecutive free throws streak of 22 snapped Feb. 19 at Oregon. Before it came to an end, her streak was the third-longest in the nation (Division I) behind Southeast Missouri's Paula Corder (36) and Valparaiso's Jill Campbell (24). Jantzen made 54 of her last 63 free throws dating back to the Jan. 28 game at California.
ASU Regains Combs In Late January
Freshman forward Leah Combs saw her minutes slowly increase after she re-entered the ASU lineup and played one minute in the loss to Oregon Jan. 23, her first taste of Pac-10 action on the season ... Combs saw 10 and 14 minutes of action Mar. 4 at UCLA and Mar. 6 at USC, respectively, her first 10-plus minute outings since an injury was detected on Dec. 30 ... Combs was ASU's leading rebounder (9.5 rpg) and third-leading scorer (10.0 ppg) when she was sidelined with stress fractures in both legs on Dec. 30 ... She was ranked fourth in Pac-10 rebounding ... Prior to the injuries, Combs had recorded four double-doubles, paced the team in rebounding five times and started all eight games.
Getting On The Offensive Boards
Arizona State posted a season-high 23 offensive rebounds Jan. 23 vs. then-No. 25 Oregon, its most in two years. The Sun Devils last posted 23 offensive boards vs. USC on Feb. 14, 1997.
Pair of Devils Reach 500-Point Milestone at Washington State
Juniors Rachel Holt and Kristine Sand both reached the 500-point plateau in their careers Jan. 9 at Washington State. Sand, who now has 614 career points, scored 14 against the Cougars to reach the 508-mark. Holt, with 622 total points, scored 13 at WSU to reach 500.
Sand Steps Up as Scoring Leader in Pac-10 Games
Junior forward Kristine Sand averaged a team second-best 9.6 points in Pac-10 games (along with Rachel Holt) ... coming into the 1998-99 season, Sand's single-game high was 17 points ... through this year's 27 games, the native of Oslo, Norway, posted three games of 20 or more points and totaled 11 games in double figures in scoring ... Sand scored a career-high 26 points vs. No. 10 UCLA (on 12-of-17 shooting) ... she drained 10 of 16 field goals for 20 points against USC just three days earlier ... Sand was named Pac-10 Player of the Week Dec. 7 after scoring a then career-high 22 points and grabbing a career-high nine boards in an overtime win against St. Joseph's in the Wells Fargo Classic championship game ... she scored four points in the final 46 seconds of regulation, then tallied seven of ASU's 14 points in OT.
Newman Records First Career Double-Double
Sophomore guard Leaf Newman stepped up her game once ASU lost the full-time rebounding services of Leah Combs (stress fractures) on Dec. 30 ... Newman led the Sun Devils on the boards against San Jose State (7) and recorded a career-high 10 rebounds against UCLA for her first collegiate double-double (15 pts.) ... she also finished the season 10th in the Pac-10 in three-point percentage with 34 percent (29-of-86) ... her 29 three-pointers tied for the team lead (with Michelle Tom) ... Newman posted 11 double-figure scoring games on the season ... she paced the team in scoring six times (16 pts. 11/28 vs. SW Louisiana; 20 pts. 12/18 at UC Irvine; 9 pts. 1/7 at Washington; 20 pts. 1/30 at Stanford; 15 pts. 2/25 vs. Stanford).
Holt: ASU's Mark of Consistency
Junior Rachel Holt notched 15 double-figure scoring games on the season, and reached the 500-point milestone with 13 points Jan. 9 at WSU ... Holt poured in a season-high 19 points (on 8-of-11 shooting) Feb. 4 vs. Washington State, adding a season-high nine boards ... she added 18 points at Oregon State ... Holt opened with 15 points, seven boards and a career-high four blocked shots against Sam Houston State Nov. 21 ... in her 15 minutes during the second half, she scored 12 points, blocked three shots and grabbed two boards ... against Gonzaga, she posted 14 points and grabbed five boards ... Holt added 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds at UC Irvine, then scored a season-high 18 points at UC Santa Barbara Dec. 21 ... she posted an 8-of-9 shooting performance (88.9 percent) at UCSB ... Holt recorded a game-high three blocked shots versus San Jose State, and grabbed eight boards at Washington State ... Holt currently ranks seventh on the ASU all-time blocked shots list with 53 and needs just six more to crack the top five ... the 6-foot-3 center was named to the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament team after averaging 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in ASU's two games ... 12 of Holt's 16 points vs. No. 11 Rutgers came from the charity stripe, and her 12 free throws tie for the second-most by a Pac-10 player this year.
