TEMPE, Ariz. - After assembling one of the nation's top recruiting classes for the 1999 season, Arizona State softball head coach Linda Wells continued on the recruiting trail for the 2000 season by signing two more standout players.
Inking letter of intents were Kara Brun of Glendale, Arizona (Deer Valley HS) and Sara Kahler of Los Alamitos, California (Los Alamitos HS).
Brun, who will join future teammates and current Sun Devils Kirsten Voak and Missy Hixon on the 1999 Junior Olympic Team, has already earned a bronze medal at the 1998 Olympic Festival. Brun was the Arizona Republic West Valley Player of the Year and a first-team all-Arizona performer as a junior.
"Kara was one of the top three shortstops in the country and clearly the best to come out of Arizona in a long time," says Wells. "She'll be a four year starter for ASU and a real stabilizer up the middle for us."
Additionally, Brun was also selected to the ASA/USA softball level III elite athlete program in 1997. She is a member of the ASA Phoenix Firestorm (Major Team) and Phoenix Storm (Gold Team).
Kahler is a three-time Long Beach Press Telegram Dream Team catcher, three-time first-team all-League pick and three-time all-CIF selection. Kahler garnered offensive MVP honors her freshman year, defensive MVP honors her sophomore year and Los Alamitos High School MVP honors her junior season.
"Sara is outstanding behind the plate and can also play some thirdbase," noted Wells. "She possesses good bat power and is sure-handed as well."
Kahler is also a member of the Southern California Firecrackers and the Firestorm of the women's majors.
In addition, Kahler excels in the classroom where she has been on the Principal's Honor Roll every semester and was named Who's Who among American High School Students.
