TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20 Arizona State baseball team (26-11 overall, 2-3 Pac-10) out-hit the University of California Golden Bears (13-20, 2-3) 23-4 in a 25-0 shutout tonight in front of 2,436 fans at Packard Stadium.
Sun Devil starter Chuck Crumpton picked up his fifth win of the season to improve to 5-0. Crumpton went seven innings, scattering three hits, walking three and striking out a career-high 12 batters. The Arizona State pitching staff struck out a season-high 16, while allowing no extra-base hits.
"Crumpton did an outstanding job for us on the mound," said head coach Pat Murphy. "He looked sharp tonight, staying focused through a long game."
Starting pitcher Ryan Atkinson took the loss for the Bears, lasting only two and one-third innings to fall to 1-6 on the season. Atkinson gave up eight runs on seven hits, one walk and one strikeout.
The Sun Devils scored their first five runs in the second inning on home runs by firstbaseman Jeff Phelps and catcher Trent Pratt. Phelps' three-run shot to left field was his second of the season. Pratt's homer to left field came two batters later and was the first of his collegiate career. Phelps finished the evening going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and five RBI. Pratt was 1-for-4 with two runs knocked in and two scored. Shortstop Willie Bloomquist also had an impressive performance at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two runs and four RBI. Centerfielder Dustin Delucchi had four singles in a 4-for-5 outing. Delucchi scored four runs and knocked in two.
Every Sun Devil starter contributed offensively with at least a hit and a run scored.
For the Bears offensively, designated hitter David Sark was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles while catcher Mike Tonis had one hit in two at-bats.
