TEMPE, Ariz.—The No. 17 Arizona State volleyball team picked up the 3-0 sweep on Friday afternoon, defeating UAB, 25-9, 25-16, 25-15, in the third match of the Residence Inn Challenge inside Wells Fargo Arena.
With the win, ASU improves to 4-0 on the year while the Blazers fall to 2-3.
Juniors Mercedes Binns and Andi Lowrance led the way in kills with seven apiece, Lowrance recording each of hers in the third frame for a new career high. Lowrance’s previous best was three, set twice during the 2013 season. The Phoenix native also hit .778 for the match, with nine attempts and no errors.
Also hitting over .700 were juniors Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette. Arellano went 3-for-4 with no errors for a clip of .750, while Follette recorded five kills in seven attempts with no errors for a mark of .714. Follette also hit .714 in the exhibition match against Mount Royal on Thursday night (10K-0E-14TA).
As a team, ASU hit .412, and held the Blazers to .098, making UAB their third opponent of the year to hit under .100 for the match. Sydney Nelson led the Blazers with six kills, while Amber Treace picked up 21 kills.
