PHOENIX– Sun Devil Baseball infielder Matt King has been named both the Big 12 Player of the Week, and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.
King posted an outrageous week, totaling a .625 batting average (10-16) with two home runs, 12 RBIs and five runs scored. He now leads the Sun Devils with a team high .416 batting average (64-154) on the season.
The multi-home run effort against BYU marked just the second time in his 203 game career between UTSA and ASU recording multiple home runs. The first time he recorded multiple home runs in a game came on April 8th against CSUN (W, 20-11).
King has racked up quite a few in-season awards as he has already been named the College Baseball HOF Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Week (April 15) and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week (March 31) prior to this week's accolades.
Additionally, King now becomes the third player in the Big 12 to have earned two conference awards in the same week (Sawyer Strosnider, TCU; Harrison Bodendorf, Oklahoma State).
The Sun Devils will compete in five games this week, including two midweek games at home against Long Beach State before hitting the road to take on Baylor in a three-game set.
