By the Numbers: Meet The New Sun Devil Football Staff

TEMPE– A new era of Sun Devil Football kicked off when Arizona State University announced the hiring of Kenny Dillingham on Nov. 27, 2022. Since then he has brought in numerous members of high quality football experience with energy and diversity. Below is a list of numbers Dillingham's new coaching staff has compiled prior to their campaign at ASU.

0.54: The amount of sacks allowed per game by offensive line coach Saga Tuitele's line in 2021 at Army, the lowest tally in FBS. 

2: Seasons where Brian Ward's defense led the nation in turnovers forced in 2017 and 2018 while coaching at Syracuse. Ward was a member of the Syracuse team that went 10-3 which included a win over No. 2 Clemson.

SOURCE: Brian Ward is expected to become the new defensive coordinator at ASU. Ward led one of the best defenses in the Pac-12's at WAZZU, ranking No. 3 in the conference. Prior to that the AZ native led Nevada to dramatic improvement on the defensive side.

3: Was the amount of defensive touchdowns WSU had under A.J. Cooper in the 2022 season, which was 10th most in FBS.

4: The number of defensive linemen under Vince Amey at Idaho State in the 2022 season who had 38 or more tackles. Additionally, five different defensive linemen had at least two tackles this season.

As a player, @VinceAmey came up with the "Red Dot" mindset. At every coaching stop, he developed the approach as a quick way to communicate to his players.

4: The number of state championships won by running backs coach Shaun Aguano as head coach at Chandler high school.

4: In A.J. Cooper's first season in Pullman at Washington State, his defense produced four All-Pac-12 Conference Selections

5: Five members of Brian Ward's defense when he was defensive coordinator in Nevada earned All-Mountain West recognition in 2020.

6: These are the number of standout players Offensive Coordinator Beau Baldwin has coached throughout his time that went on to play professionally. They include: 15-year NFL veteran Jon Kitna, 2005 Walter Payton Award Winner Erik Meyer, 11-year CFL veteran Mike Reilly, 2011 Walter Payton Award Winner Bo Levi Mitchell, CFL All-Star and former Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams and NFL All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

6: The amount of consecutive state championships Tight Ends coach Jason Mohns had at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale from 2013-18, the first team in Arizona to do so. In his 11 seasons at Saguaro, he finished with seven state championships and compiled a 123-19 record.

8: The amount of forced fumbles that the WSU Cougars defense had under Sun Devil linebackers coach A.J. Cooper in his first season in 2020, which led the league. 

11: The amount of five star recruits ASU Cornerbacks coach Bryan Carrington has brought in since 2016 in his time at Texas, USC and Houston along with TCU. This includes Texas running back Bijan Robinson, who was the No. 1 running back in the Class of 2020, Class of 2019 Maxwell Award winner Bru McCoy and Texas Gatorade Player of the Year Jake Smith.

11: The number of rushing touchdowns by Ulysses Bentley IV, who Ra'Shaad Samples coached at SMU, which was an SMU single season record for a freshman. As running backs coach, Samples helped Bentley IV to FWAA Freshman All-America honors and AAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2020.

19: The ranking of Wyoming's defense that linebacker coach A.J. Cooper was a member of that only allowed 326.2 yards in total defense.

22.4: The amount of points per game that defensive coordinator Brian Ward's defense at Washington State allowed in the 2022 season, which was third in the Pac-12 and 33rd in the FBS. This was tied for the sixth-best total in program history. 

25: This was how many turnovers the Nevada Wolfpack had under coach Brian Ward after the 2021 season, this was the eighth highest in FBS.

27: The age of wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Ra'Shaad Samples when he was the running backs coach this season for the Los Angeles Rams, the youngest position coach in the NFL.

29.06: The school-record average of yards per return for Charlie Ragle's special teams at Cal in the 2021 season. The Golden Bears ranked fourth nationally and led the Pac-12 in kick returns that season.

If you made a Mount Rushmore of Arizona high school football coaches, at least in the modern era, Jason Mohns, Shaun Agauno and Charlie Ragle would all be on it.

39.7: The average of points per game Oregon had in the 2022 season with Kenny Dillingham as their offensive coordinator, which was eighth in FBS.

85: The amount of wins Beau Baldwin achieved during his nine seasons at Eastern Washington which included the 2010 FCS National Championship, including three trips to the FCS Semifinals in his eight seasons.

285: The amount of quarterback pressures that Washington State edge defenders had under now Sun Devil linebackers coach A.J. Cooper over the past three seasons. This was the third most in the Pac-12 and just two behind Utah who played in more games than WSU since 2020.

313.4: The amount of yards per game offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin's offense had in 2022 as head coach at Cal Poly as the passing offense ranked fifth in the FCS.

383.3: The amount of rushing yards Cal Poly averaged in 2015 under Saga Tuitele in Cal Poly, who led the FCS in rushing yardage 2013-15.

507.8: The average amount of yards per game head coach Kenny Dillingham's offense had in 2022 at Oregon, good for fourth in FBS.

1,083: The number of yards Eno Benjamin had in the 2019 season in running backs coach Shaun Aguano's first season with the Sun Devils. Benjamin reached the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second-straight year and became the first ASU running back since Freddie Williams in 1974-75 to accomplish the feat in consecutive years.

2021: The year of SMU's recruiting class that was the highest ranked class in program history. Coach Ra'Shaad Samples was able to develop a reputation of being one of the nation's elite recruiters.

7,234: The record-setting number of total yards that Kenny Dillingham's Memphis offense had in the 2018 season. They also had a record 3,919 rushing yards and the rushing attack was the fourth-best in the nation, averaging 279.9 yards per game. The Tigers also had 48 touchdowns on the ground, which was the second-highest total in the country. Dillingham also helped produce the first season in Memphis history with two 1,000-yard rushers.
