TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil for Life Sargis Sargsian will be inducted into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame as announced by the association.
Sargsian, arguably one of the most prolific players to come out of Sun Devil men's tennis, will become a part of the 2019 class after a storied collegiate and professional career.
"During that stage of his development, Arizona State provided a tremendous opportunity. Sargis maximized the moment," former Sun Devil head coach Lou Belken said. "At the same time because of his daily discipline and pursuit of purpose he made his teammates and coaching staff better. Congratulations on a well deserved HOF selection. We are proud of his time representing the Sun Devils."
At Arizona State, the Armenian was a two-time All-American, two-time ITA indoor champion and capped his career with a NCAA Singles National Championship. Sargsian was also the 1995 ITA Player of the Year and Pac-10 Player of the Year for his efforts in his final season as a Sun Devil.
"It's an huge honor for a Sun Devil for Life to be inducted into the ITA Hall of Fame because there are so many incredible players and coaches that are in there," coach Matt Hill said. "We've had so much talent come through Arizona State, but obviously Sargis is one of the most decorated."
On the professional circuit while still on the team, Sargsian won one ATP event (Newport), reached two finals and also won a doubles title.
After his time in Tempe, Sargsian peaked at a career-high No. 38 in the world in January 2004. He reached at least the third round in all four Grand Slam events and also played in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympics for his native Armenia.
"He's definitely someone for the guys to look up to and say 'OK, I want to be like that one day'", Hill said. "It gives our current guys a strong sense of pride in what they're playing for, what it means to put on this jersey and play for Arizona State and confidence in what we're trying to build long-term here."
The ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame is housed at the University of Georgia's Henry Field stadium in Athens. The induction ceremony luncheon will take place on Sunday, May 19th in Orlando, Florida. Following the luncheon, the 2019 class will be honored on court before the start of the NCAA Men's Team Finals at 3 p.m.
