Playing in only the fourth game of his career, Ruiz delivered a clutch performance in helping the Sun Devils knock off then-No. 24 Oregon 37-35 on Saturday night.
Ruiz punctuated his perfect night (3-3 FGs, 4-4 PATs) by connecting on a game-winning 41-yard field goal with 2:33 remaining. Ruiz was also successful on field goals from 29 and 24 yards.
In addition to the points he was responsible for, Ruiz' right leg was also an effective weapon for the Sun Devils on kickoffs. The Ducks, who came into the game ranked No. 13 in the nation on kickoff returns, returned only one kick on the night (25 yards) as Ruiz accounted for six touchbacks. In addition, Ruiz also helped ASU gain an extra possession after the Sun Devils recovered his perfectly-executed onside kick in the first quarter.
For Arizona State it represents the eighth consecutive season the program has had at least one Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week honoree. The most recent player to win the award was former placekicker Zane Gonzalez who claimed a single-season school record four player-of-the-week awards last season.
The Sun Devils (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12) return to action on Saturday (1 p.m. PT) when they travel to the Bay Area to take on Stanford (2-2, 1-1) in a game that can be seen on Pac-12 Network and heard on ESPN Radio 620 AM.
