Albertson Couple Clocks Record Times in IowaAlbertson Couple Clocks Record Times in Iowa
AMES, Iowa/ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – History was made on Friday night at the Lie Recreation Athletic Center, as senior CJ Albertson broke the Arizona State 5,000-meter indoor record with a time of 13:50.24.

Albertson's time, which was in his first race of the indoor season, surpassed that of Brian Pierre's 13:50.37 set back in 2012.

"It was a great day, as our runners went 4-for-4 with personal bests today," said distance coach Louie Quintana. "CJ was so patient and smart. He executed very well, especially being it was his first race of the year. School record, enough said."

It was only fitting that in the race just before, CJ's better half, Chelsey Albertson, raced to the third-best time in ASU history in the same event – the 5,000-meter. Her time of 16:03.47 is the fastest since former NCAA Champions Amy Hastings (2007) and Victoria Jackson (2006), who sit right above her at first and second, respectively.

"Chelsey ran incredibly tough," said Quintana. "She put herself in the race and gave herself a chance. That's how you have to do it. She's not in bad company, that's for sure."

Chelsey finished 4th overall out of 25 runners, while CJ placed 9th out of 34.

Earlier in the afternoon, freshman Megan Reniewicki and junior Billie Jo Dytrt also ran personal bests in the women's 3,000-meter event. Reniewicki, who was participating in her first NCAA event, finished 12th out of 20 with a time of 10:08.64. Dytrt crossed right on her heels in 14th with a time of 10:08.68, which was her second meet this season competing in the 3,000 meter.

Back in New Mexico, redshirt junior Maggie Ewen continued to make waves in the weight throw as she surpassed her personal best yet again. Not only did she place first of 43 people, but her mark of 21.36m (70-1.00) ranks 3rd all-time in ASU history.

Freshman Kaylee Antill and senior Ashley Weber represented the Devils with top-15 finishes as well.

For the men, graduate Garrett Starkey tied for 3rd in the pole vault with a new personal best clearance of 5.30m (17-04.50). The only collegiate athlete to finish above Starkey was Cole Walsh from Oregon at just six inches higher.

Teammate and fellow vaulter Matt Eckles finished right behind Starkey in a tie for 7th at 5.10m (16-08.75), and was the 4th among college competitors.

Speaking of clearance, redshirt sophomore Joey Bryant finished in a tie for 2nd out of 27 jumpers in the high jump. The transfer from Mt. San Antonio cleared 2.05m (6-08.75), which was just two inches lower than UCLA's Michael Burke in 1st.

Arguably the biggest personal best of the day came from redshirt senior Kyle Long in the weight throw, as he hit 19.98m (65-06.75), which is nearly two feet further than his personal best hit just a week ago. The senior continues to make improvements under new throws coach Brian Blutreich with his new mark moving him into 3rd all-time on the weight throw list.

On the track in Albuquerque, two Sun Devils qualified for the semi-finals on Saturday. In the 60-meter dash, new transfer Paul Lucas clocked a time of 6.88 for 6th out of 33 athletes in his first event in the maroon and gold. He'll compete in the 60-meter semi-final at 10:55 a.m. MST.

Hurdler Shaunie Morrison was the other to qualify, as she finished first overall out of 55 runners with a time of 8.45 – also a new personal best. Morrison will compete in the semi-final just prior to Lucas at 10:45 a.m.

In the all-rare 600-meter dash, Melese Crozier finished in first of all 20 runners with a time of 1:30.96.

Both meets begin on Saturday morning, with Michael Coccia getting the Devils started in Iowa at 12 p.m. MST. Ewen and Weber throw in the shot put at 9:30 a.m. MST in Albuquerque.
