The Arizona State women's golf team got off to a rough start at the Bruin/Wave Invitational. Held at the par 72, 6,282-yard Robinson Ranch Golf Club, the team carded a 6-over 294 to finish the day tied for seventh. Arizona leads the field shooting a 5-under 283. The tournament will continue through Wednesday.
"Today was kind of learning about the golf course," said eighth year head coach Melissa Luellen. "We played the first hole bad and had to battle back after a 4-over start on the first hole. There were some good things that happened, but there were some short putts missed, some mismanagement of the course, so we'll reevaluate and come back strong tomorrow."
Carlota Ciganda led the Sun Devils shooting an even 72 to close out the first round tied for 11th. The All-American earned three birdies during the day, on the 11th, 16th, and first hole. Giulia Molinaro was ASU's second-lowest finisher. She shot a 1-over 73, highlighted by a nice birdie putt on hole two. She will enter the second round tied for 20th.
Jennifer Johnson shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 31st heading into the second round. The freshman hit the ball right next to the pin from the fairway on the par-4 15th hole and tapped it in for an easy birdie. Jaclyn Sweeney had a bit of a roller coaster of a day. The junior knocked in four straight birdies but also had three double bogeys. Senior Juliana Murcia shot a 5-over 77.
The Sun Devils are paired with New Mexico and UNLV tomorrow. The team will tee off at 8 a.m.
