RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The No. 16 Arizona State University water polo team opened its 2006 season in dominating fashion as a duo of rookies led the Sun Devils to a 10-5 victory over No. 20 Cal Baptist Friday night in Riverside, Calif. The Sun Devils (1-0, 0-0 MPSF) saw two freshmen score seven of the team's goals to send the Lancers to their first loss of the season (3-1).
Freshman Addison Doud (Laguna Beach, Calif.) made an impressive debut for the Sun Devils as she tallied four goals on the day while fellow classmate Rowie Webster (Melbourne, Australia) added three scores of her own in her first collegiate game. Joining them in the scoring column were last year's Top 2 scorers, Katie Hedley (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif.) and Ashley Bower (Jr., Bondi Beach, Australia), who added two and one goal, respectively. Doud, Webster and Raelyn Ritchie (Jr., Newport Beach, Calif.) each assisted on one goal in the game.
On the defensive end, Caylinn Wallace (So., Laguna Hills, Calif.) recorded seven saves on the game while eight different players recorded at least one steal in the contest. Doud and Lindsay Williams (Jr., Long Beach, Calif.) each posted two take-aways while single steals were recorded by Kim Buck (So., Lisle, Ill.), Hedley, Heather Rempfer (Sr., Lodi, Calif.), Tessa Wyborny (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), Traci Aparicio (So., Downey, Calif.) and Katy Lawlor (So., El Segundo, Calif.).
The game was not only the first of the season for the Sun Devils, but also the first game with Todd Clapper as the team's head coach.
The Sun Devils continue their opening weekend Saturday with a pair of games as part of the Lancer Invitational. ASU opens the day with CS San Bernardino at 11:40 a.m. before concluding its stay in Southern California with a 2:45 p.m. contest with CS Bakersfield.
