Las Vegas, Nev.—The No. 15 Arizona State men’s golf team is in fifth place after the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters on Monday. After finishing the front nine outside of the top 10, the Sun Devils rallied with 10 birdies and an eagle on the back nine to finish at 2-under 286 for the day at the par-72, 7,374-yard Southern Highlands Golf Course.
Third-ranked Texas is currently in first at 12-under 276 with a four-stroke lead over No. 22 Oklahoma State. No. 23 Oklahoma sits in third at 7-under 281, while No. 1 Illinois is in fourth place with a 5-under 283. Arizona State is three strokes back from Illinois in fifth.
Individually, Oklahoma’s Charlie Saxon and UNLV’s Redford Bobbitt share the top spot on the leader board. ASU juniors Max Rottluff and Jon Rahm are tied for 10th at 2-under 70 heading into Tuesday’s round.
Rahm, who double bogeyed his first hole of the day, ended on a high note with two birdies down the home stretch and an eagle on 18. Through 18 holes, Rahm leads the field in scoring on par-five holes (-4).
Freshman Tobias Eden also finished under par for the day. After 14 holes of pars and two bogeys, Eden finished strong with birdies on 15, 16, and 18. Eden is currently tied for 16th with a 1-under 71.
The Sun Devils look to continue their momentum into Tuesday’s round and chip away at the Longhorns’ lead. Arizona State tees off beginning at 9:50 a.m. PDT/MST from hole one with Texas and No. 7 Southern California. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
