Baseball Wins Both Games of Doubleheader against Hawaii-Hilo

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State baseball team (6-0, 0-0) defeated Hawaii-Hilo (3-6, 0-0) 3-0 in the front end of a doubleheader with the Vulcans yesterday at Wong Stadium in Hilo.

Junior lefthander Will Waldrip (2-0) got his second start of the season for the Sun Devils after transferring from Brigham Young. He turned in another impressive performance to pick up the win while pitching his second complete game shutout of the season. Waldrip surrendered only two hits, both singles, while striking out 11 and walking three. Waldrip has yet to give up an extra-base hit this season.

The scoring started for Arizona State in the third inning when centerfielder Dustin Delucchi reached on a bunt single to the pitcher. Rightfielder Jeff Duncan then reached on an error by the pitcher and Delucchi scored on the error. The only other offensive for the Devils came in the sixth inning when Duncan singled to left center. Duncan advanced to second on a bunt single by third baseman Andrew Beinbrink. Duncan and Beinbrink scored on a two-run double down the leftfield line by first baseman Jeff Phelps. Duncan finished the game going 1-for-3 while Beinbrink contributed a 2-for-3 performance. Phelps was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Sophomore righthander Ben Siff picked up the loss for the Vulcans to fall to 0-1 on the season. In an eight-inning performance, Siff gave up three earned runs on seven hits. Siff struck out three and walked one.

The only two hits for Hawaii-Hilo came from leftfielder Patrick Lynch and shortstop William Rayl, both finishing the day 1-for-3.

The second game of the doubleheader was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

Junior righthander Ted Chmielinski started the game for Arizona State but would not get the decision. Chmielinski went two innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits, one strikeout, and one walk. Freshman Jon Switzer (1-0) got the decision for the Devils, picking up his first win of the season. Switzer pitched 3-plus perfect innings, giving up no runs on no hits and six strikeouts.

The Sun Devils scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning. Jay Sitzman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single by second baseman Mark Ernster. Sitzman then scored and Ernster advanced to third on an RBI single down the leftfield line by catcher Trent Pratt. Willie Bloomquist knocked a two-run triple to center to score Ernster and Pratt. After a pitching change, Bloomquist scored the fourth run of the inning on a ground out by Duncan. Ernster finished with a perfect outing, going 4-for-4 with three RBI. Bloomquist went 1-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored.

Starting pitcher Kaholo Rickard (0-2) picked up the loss for the Vulcans. Rickard went three innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and three walks.

Offensively for the Vulcans, thirdbaseman Scott Wallis went 1-for-3 and knocked in a run. Designated hitter Kevin Yee had a 1-for-2 outing with one RBI.

With the two wins yesterday, Arizona State improves to 9-0 in the all-time series with Hawaii-Hilo.

The Sun Devils conclude the series with Hawaii-Hilo today in a doubleheader in Kona beginning at 2 p.m. MST. ASU returns home on Friday, January 29 at 7 p.m. to take on Howard University in a three-game series at Packard Stadium.
