TEMPE, Ariz.-- The Arizona State men's and women's swimming and diving teams split -- (ASU men 153-147), (UA women 204.5-93.5) -- a dual meet with Arizona before a crowd of 150 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
On the men's side, the No. 13 Sun Devils won their fourth straight, and first Pac-10, dual meet, defeating the No. 10 Wildcats 153-147. The meet was a tight contest throughout with ASU leading by a single point going into the final event. Leading the Devils to victory in the final event was the relay team of Francisco Sanchez, Pablo Abal, Scott VonSchoff, and Craig Hutchinson, whose time of 1:12.09 in the 200 free relay secured the upset for the Devils.
Pacing the Devils (6-4, 1-3 Pac-10) was Sanchez who scored a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 free (44.53) and the 100 fly (48.45). Also posting top finishes for the Devils were freshman Adam Guzauskas (100 breast, 56.85), Abal (50 free, 20.47), and freshman Christian Jacobson (200 back, 1:50.02).
In the diving portion sophomore Allan Sonkin posted a first-place finish in the one-meter dive for the Devils.
On the women's side, the No. 5 Wildcats posted a lopsided 204.5-93.5 victory over the No. 21 Sun Devils (7-4, 1-3 Pac-10). The 200 I.M. was the only event in which the Devils had a top finisher (Carolyn Adel, 2:03.99).
Junior all-American Katrina Pfeuffer recorded a first-place finish in the three-meter dive for ASU.
