TUCSON – Saturday was a day for personal bests with several Sun Devils setting lifetime marks and moving up in the NCAA West Region's descending order list, including Maggie Ewen's second collegiate record of the season, this time in the shot put, in Tucson at the Desert Heat Classic.
Ewen opened the day with a second-place finish in the hammer throw, but came back and threw a consistent shot put series that ended with her claiming another NCAA record.
"I didn't expect to break it today, but practices have been going well and we've been working on a lot of really good things, so my consistency been there," Ewen said. "Even coach Blu who is not overly positive has been like, 'yeah, there's a good one, you're so close.'"
She launched the shot 19.46m/63-10.25 feet to top Raven Saunders' record that stood for two years.
The 2018 NCAA Indoor champion in the shot put, Ewen, now owns the collegiate record in two events outdoors as she already had the hammer throw record coming into the season, but extended her lead at the 39th Sun Angel Classic earlier this month.
"I'm just trying to stay consistent really, through Pac-12's and obviously advance through regionals and do as well as I can at nationals," Ewen said. "Brooke Anderson threw outstanding today in the hammer today, so it's going to be really fun and a really cool hammer competition at nationals, so I just have to be ready for that and keep going."
Ewen and Jenny Simpson (neé Barringer) are the only women who currently hold two NCAA outdoor records in two different events.
Also in the shot put, redshirt freshman Samantha Noennig improved her personal best to 17.31m/56-9.5 when she finished second in the event. The throw moved her up in the West and she remains in the top-10 in the region and fourth in school history.
Like Ewen, Noennig is in position to make the Preliminary Rounds in California's capital in two events. Her lifetime best in the discus today also put her at 35th in the region.
"Sam's been outstanding," Ewen said. "Obviously she came to us as a really good athlete and I think Blu has developed her even more. I would love to have her at NCAAs because I want to help her for her first one. I just remember my first time being out there, and it was pretty tough alone."
Elijah Hughes cleared a collegiate best height of 2.13m/6-11.75 to improve to 19th in the region and fifth in the Pac-12. Hughes joins senior Mason Ford in the top-10 in the conference as Ford sits in seventh with two weeks to go until the Pac-12 Championships.
Jessica Barreira soared in the long jump with her personal best leap of 6.25m/20-6.25 feet that won her the competition down South. Barreira is already in the hunt for a regional place in the triple jump and javelin throw, and with her jump Saturday, Barreira moves into the top-20 in the region in the event.
In the women's hammer throw, Kaylee Antill's personal best mark of 63.01m/206-9 put her in position to make the regional in May, too. She was already seventh in school history in the event, but her heave in Tucson pushed her into sixth.
Most of the Sun Devils will have next weekend off, then will head into postseason competition in mid-May for the Pac-12 Championships in Palo Alto, California.
