TEMPE – The final day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe included some long-anticipated outdoor debuts from several new Sun Devils, as well as a host of solid outings from some familiar names.

Graduate transfer Alethia Marrero had a busy Saturday for her Sun Devil debut that included running in the open 400-meter dash, 4x100-and 4x400-meter relays.

An 800-meter All-American, Marrero showed her range when she finished third in the 400 in 54.85, and ran the third legs on both the women's 4x1 and 4x4.

"When you move outdoors, you're really just looking for continued progress," coach Greg Kraft said. "When you look at the women's team and Alethia running those legs for both relay teams, it really changes the complexion of our team, and she had a great opening quarter for us."

Sha'Maya Flanagan matched Marrero's triple on the track as she took sixth in the 400, led off the Sun Devils' second-place 4x400-meter quartet and anchored ASU's A-team to a fourth-place finish in the 4x1.

The big day for the sprinters was kicked off by Shaunie Morrison's win in the 100-meter hurdles. She clocked a 13.49 in that event, then came back at the end of the day and ran the second-fastest time today by a Sun Devil woman in the 200. ASU's fastest 200-meter time came from another newcomer in Kalei Matthews, who finished sixth after winning her heat in the 100 and taking 10th overall.

"Kalei was able to run a great 100-200," Kraft said. "You could tell she was kind of out of place indoors, but she looks to be back in her comfort zone outdoors."

Over in the field, Elijah Hughes got the job done in the vertical and horizontal jumps for the Devils. The sophomore jumper led the ASU men in the long jump, placing fifth with a leap of 7.19m/23-7.25 feet, then completed a double later in the day when he took second in the high jump by clearing 2.08m/6-9.75 feet.

The Devils got another runner-up finish from John Reniewicki in the 3,000-meter run. It was Reniewicki's first time lacing up for the Devils since the cross country season where he was the Sun Devils' No. 1 runner throughout the fall, and a first-team Pac-12 all-academic honoree.

"We need to continue to get better on the guys side," Kraft said. "John is a very talented distance runner, so it's good to have him back in those events."

Ryan Normand took fourth in the same event, and Samantha Ortega finished fifth in the women's running of the 3,000.

Redshirt-freshman Samantha Noennig set a collegiate best in the discus to open the day when she recorded a mark of 48.26m/158-4 feet.

"We really started where we needed to, particularly when you look at where we are in our training," Kraft said. "We look at it as we have nine weeks until the Pac-12 Championships, so we're guardedly optimistic about what we could potentially do at the conference level."

Three Baldy Castillo meet records were set Saturday, bringing the weekend total to four after the women's javelin record was broken Friday afternoon.

Former Sun Devil Christabel Nettey (6.70m/21-11.75 feet) broke her own women's long jump record, Paul Dedewo (45.21) broke an 18-year-old 400-meter record and Fred Kerley topped his own meet record in the 200 with a time of 20.41.

The second of three home meets this season will be ASU's next outing. Sun Angel Stadium hosts the Pac-12/Big Ten+ Challenge next Friday and Saturday, March 23-24. Along with welcoming programs from the prestigious Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences, the meet will also include SEC powerhouse LSU.
