COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Magdalyn Ewen improved her school record in the indoor shot put and moved up to fifth on the NCAA's all-time list, and Matthew Eckles recorded a new personal best in the pole vault Saturday at the Texas A&M Quadrangular in College Station.
Ewen's mark of 18.67m/61-3.00 moved her from ninth all-time to fifth in collegiate history and increased her lead on the rest of the NCAA this season to more than four feet.
She set the meet record later in the day in the weight throw when she heaved the 20-pound weight 21.48m/70-5.75 feet.
In the men's pole vault, Eckles finished third when he topped 5.22m/17-1.50 feet, a personal best and the sixth-best mark in school history. It was the second top-10 pole vault mark set in 2018 as true freshman Cole Riddle jumped 5.18m/17-0.00 feet last weekend at the NAU Friday Night Challenge.
"I felt terrific," Eckles said. "It was definitely a big comeback off of last week. All of my boys cleared a height, and I think that's a big thing for all five pole vaulters to clear a height two weeks in-a-row."
Riddle was one of the last Sun Devils standing in the competition. He finished seventh, Nathan Hiett and Grant Sisserson tied for eighth and Michael Chadwick took 11th.
"We have a great squad and a lot of support," Eckles said. "I had Grant and Nate giving me some tips today, and it's great to have some old minds on the team. We got a view of what A&M can do with those two [5.50m] jumps. That's exciting stuff and that's where we want to be."
The women's 800-meter run produced one of the fastest times in school history when Bianca Tinoco crossed the finish line in 2:11.42 to put her name at No. 9 on ASU's list.
Shaunie Morrison took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 8.45, and came back to win her heat in the 200-meter dash in 25.60. In the next heat, Sha'Maya Flanagan took the heat win with a personal best 24.76.
Flanagan also ran the opening leg of the Devils' 4x400-meter relay and helped the quartet run a season's best 3:47.24.
"I think our women's team took a significant step today," coach Greg Kraft said. "I was impressed with how Shaunie competed in the hurdles and how she came back and competed in the 200 later. I was also impressed by how Sha'Maya ran, and the middle-distance crew did a great job, too."
The Devils' other event win on the day came from Darreyl Woodson in the triple jump. She leaped 12.59m/41-3.75 feet, a personal best.
Six more Sun Devils finished in the top-five of their respective events at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium, including Samantha Ortega in the 3,000-meter run (4th), Mason Ford and Elijah Hughes in the high jump (T-3rd), Michael Titherington in the shot put (3rd) and Ivan Hinson in the triple jump (3rd).
"Our women are trending upward in a lot of different things," Kraft said. "Not just in their performances today, but how they're going about it, and those things kind of go hand in hand."
Most of the sun Devils will get next week off ahead of an early February trip to the Cornhusker State for Nebraska's Husker Invitational.
