NOTES FROM LAST GAME – @UCF 85 ASU 76 / FEB. 12, 2025
• Despite Jalyn Brown's 10th 20-point game and Kennedy Basham's 3rd double-double, ASU lost at UCF 85-76 on Wednesday night.
• For ASU, a difficult 1st quarter segued into an excellent first 7 minutes of the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately, UCF was able to reclaim the momentum before halftime.
• Brown, who scored 20 or more points for the 8th time in her last 13 games, led the way with 22 points to go with 5 rebounds. She was one of 5 Sun Devils who scored in double figures at UCF. Joining her were Tyi Skinner (14 points), Jyah LoVett (11 points), Nevaeh Parkinson(10 points, five rebounds) and Basham (10 points, team-high three blocks).
• ASU had a strong night on the boards, outrebounding the Knights 39-37. Coming off a 10-rebound at UA on Saturday, Basham again led ASU on the glass with 11 rebounds giving her back-to-back double-digit rebounding performances for the first time this season. Makayla Moore, who has gradually had more playing time in the last several games, pulled down 8 rebounds, scored 7 points and led the team in assists (5) and steals (3) in 36-plus minutes.
• The 1st half was punctuated by massive scoring runs for both teams. Up 15-10, UCF scored the last 14 points of the 1st quarter to take a 29-10 lead after 10 minutes. The Sun Devils turned the tables on the Knights in the 2nd quarter. Trailing 32-14, LoVett hit ASU's first 3-pointer of the game and ignited an 18-1 run for the Sun Devils.
• Coming off such a tremendous period of offense, the Sun Devils suddenly lost the momentum as UCF scored the last six points of the first half to take a 39-32 lead at the half.
• The remainder of the game followed a similar pattern. After each of the four times ASU got within seven points, the Knights had a response and did not allow the Sun Devils to get any closer.
SERIES NOTES
• ASU has won 11 of the last 19 meetings – or 11 of 20 counting game ASU had to forfeit at Utah in 2022-23 due to not having enough healthy players. Utah has won 5 of the last 8 contests decided on the court, most recently on Dec. 21 when it defeated ASU in the first ever Big 12 contest in conference play for both teams. Jalyn Brown paced ASU with 22 points on 50 percent shooting (8-16). Tyi Skinner and Jyah LoVett each had 16 points; a season high for the latter. Nevaeh Parkinson added 14 points, hitting 86 percent of her shots (6-7).
• During a three-season stretch between 2018-20, the two teams played four consecutive games that were each decided by two points and a fifth in which the margin of victory was four.
• In 2019, ASU pulled off the biggest comeback in school history when it scored the last 20 points of the game to erase an 18-point deficit.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
• Including Saturday's game, the Sun Devils are playing 3 of their last 5 regular season games at home.
• The Sun Devils were dealt a tremendous blow last week when head coach Natasha Adair announced junior guard Kennedy Fauntleroywould miss the rest of the season due to injury. At the time of her injury, Fauntleroy had played in 22 games (12 starts) and was 2nd on the team in steals (1.6 spg), 3rd in assists (2.5 apg) and 5th in scoring (8.7 ppg).
• Jalyn Brown (11x) and Tyi Skinner (10x) have combined to lead/tie for the team lead in scoring 21x. Also among the single-game scoring leaders have been Nevaeh Parkinson (3x), Jyah LoVett (1x) and Fauntleroy (1x).
• Skinner (22/25 games) and Brown (18/22 games) have combined to score in double figures 40x. The duo has also teamed up to score 20 or more points 16x: Brown 10x and Skinner 6x. Most recently, Brown scored a team-high 22 points at UCF, the 8th time she has scored 20 or more points in her last 13 games.
• Skinner (60 3-pointers this season) enters Saturday's game tied with Amanda Levens (2000-01 season) for No. 7 for most 3-pointers in a season by a Sun Devil. With 5 more triples, Skinner can move all the way up to a tie for No. 4 on the list with alongside Briann January(2008-09 season) and Katie Hempen (2015-16 season). Hempen set the current record of 76 in 2014-15. In her first season as Sun Devil in 2022-23, Skinner tied Courtney Ekmark (2018-19) for No. 2 on the list with 68. Skinner is also No. 7 on ASU's list for career 3-pointers by a Sun Devil (128). She needs 6 more to move into a tie for No. 5 (Crystal Cobb (1989-94).
• Skinner needs 65 points to reach 1,000 points as a Sun Devil.
• Jyah LoVett, who was not available for ASU's game at No. 24 Oklahoma State (Jan. 29), has scored in double figures 14x this season. Last month she had a streak snapped in which she scored in double figures in six straight games (averaged 14.7 points and connected on 54.5 percent of her shots during that stretch). Ten of LoVett's double-figure scoring games have come in her last 14 games.
• Kennedy Basham has had multiple blocks in a game 16x this season, including a career-high seven rejections at San Francisco (Dec. 17). She has also had six blocks 2x, most recently at Oklahoma St. (Jan. 29). Currently with 62 blocks, Basham is No. 2 on ASU's list for most blocks in a season. Kali Bennett tops the list with 91 rejections in 2011-12.
• Makayla Moore has been a force coming off the bench for ASU in recent games. In the last 3 games, Moore is 2nd on the team in rebounds (6.7 rpg) and tied with Basham for the team lead in offensive rebounds (3.3 rpg). She has also scored 7 points 2x in last 3 games.
WHAT IFS AND MIGHT HAVE BEENS
The Sun Devils entered the 2024-25 season with eight new players on the roster. With that have come the ups and downs that can sometimes go with combining the talents of several outstanding players who have not had a lot of time to gel. That factor alone could account for ASU's current record. With several near misses, ASU is much closer to being in the top half of the Big 12 than its current record indicates.
• Against Arkansas State, ASU trailed by 13 with 6:15 remaining. After a 19-5 run, ASU was up by one with 1:01 remaining. Arkansas State scored the last five points of the game to claim the win.
• After going into the half with a 42-33 win vs. Grand Canyon, the Sun Devils were outscored 37-17 in the second half.
• At Coppin State, ASU was unable to score in the final 53 seconds to break a 61-61 tie. The Eagles would go on to win in OT.
• Despite a stout defensive effort and a plus-12 advantage on the boards, the Sun Devils came up on the short end of a 57-50 decision at UC Davis. For the second straight game the Sun Devils held the opposition to the fewest points they had given up this season and allowed the Aggies to shoot only 37 pct. ASU made only 28 pct of its shots and knocked down one of its 14 attempts from long range. Down by eight entering the fourth quarter, ASU got within one possession three times late in the game but did not come away with points in each instance. After Maggie Besselink's earlier field goal got ASU within two, the Sun Devils were only able to connect on three of their 14 shot attempts in the final five minutes of the game.
• At San Francisco, ASU was unable to take advantage of a 27-point performance from Skinner and a career-high and a tremendous all-around performance from Basham, who had 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocks. The difference in the game was at the FT line where the Dons had more than 3x as many attempts (29-35) as ASU (9-11). Still, ASU was tied at 57-57 with 1:09 remaining. After the Dons took a six-point lead, Skinner hit two triples and missed a third that would have sent the game to OT.
• ASU came up short in what would have been the biggest comeback in program history in a 90-83 loss to Iowa St. (Jan. 8). Down by as many as 20, ASU was within three points with 13 seconds remaining. A win would have eclipsed the biggest comeback in program history: 18 points vs. Utah on Feb. 17, 2019, a game in which ASU scored the last 20 points of the game to edge Utah 60-58.
• At then-No. 11 Kansas State (Jan. 19), ASU trailed by two after one quarter, by six at the half and were able get back within seven three times in the fourth quarter after falling behind by as many as 17.
• Led Cincinnati (Jan. 25) by nine points in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for ASU, a 23-7 Cincinnati down the stretch prevented the Sun Devils from coming away with the win.
• Despite only having eight players available and playing in the kind of hostile environment reserved only for rivalry games, ASU showed tremendous grit in battling back from an 11-point deficit to tie the game after Jyah LoVett's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter. In the end, ASU's gallant effort was not enough. Due in large part to a 9-0 run that started after LoVett tied the game, the Wildcats were able to come away with a 66-59 win on Feb. 8.
