MANOA, Hawaii – Trading the Grand Canyon state for the Aloha State, No. 12 Sun Devil Water Polo heads to Hawaii for their first road games of the 2025 season. After hosting the ASU Invitational, the Sun Devils will face off against Biola, LMU, and No. 5 Hawaii in the four-team Hawaii Invitational at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on Jan. 24-25.

LAST WEEKEND
ASU outscored their opponents 38-19 in their first two games to start off the ASU Invitational. The team defeated Cal Lutheran 19-6 in the first game and outscored No. 23 San Diego State 19-13 in the second match of the day. The Maroon and Gold then remained undefeated by finishing off the ASU Invitational with victories against No. 15 UC Davis and Cal Baptist. ASU captured the first game on Sunday against the Aggies 10-8, then pulled away against the Lancers 16-10.
FRESHMAN PHENOM
Spaniard Itziar Almeda immediately made a splash this past weekend with her dominant performance in the pool, she played in all four games, notching at least one goal and one assist in every game. In the Saturday slate, she had a 100% shot percentage, three goals, and four assists versus Cal Lutheran while she secured another two goals and three assists against No. 23 SDSU. On Sunday, she earned two goals and three assists against UC Davis, and scored two goals and notched an assist versus Cal Baptist. She scored nine goals and 11 assists for a total of 20 points for the weekend.
MILESTONE MOMENTS
Millie Quin finished the weekend with twelve goals and four assists, officially surpassing 150 career points. Sophie Shorter-Robinson surpassed 100 career points, scoring fourteen goals between the four matches. She leads the team in goals scored.
LAST SEASON
Sun Devil Water Polo had their second winningest season in their 23rd year of existence, going 23-8 after starting out 11-1 which is the third-best start in program history. The Sun Devils managed 12 wins over ranked opponents in 2024 and increased their win total by 12 games from the 2023 season. For the first time in program history, Luca Petovary was named MPSF's Player of the Year, the second major award winner in program history, and the first time a Sun Devil has won the honor. She rewrote the history books last season by scoring a program record 122 goals and breaking a 26-year MPSF record for most goals in a season.

- The Collegiate Water Polo Association has ranked the Sun Devils at No. 12 heading into the second week of the season.
- Seven Sun Devils tallied their first collegiate goals at the ASU Invitational, Itziar Almeda, Karly Frangieh, Ani Pamp, Layla Smith, Keri Glad, Leila Meraz, and Hannah McClaskey
- Junior transfer Molly Glad notched her first goals in the Maroon and Gold, earning at least one goal in every game last weekend.
- All four goaltenders for the Sun Devils saw action last weekend with freshman Keri Glad and Junior Sanne Keijzer each recording 24 saves.
- Juniors Millie Quin and Sophie Shorter-Robinson had double digit goal counts after this weekend with Quin scoring 14 and Shorter-Robinson earning 12.
- The duo from New Zealand also saw some milestone moments as Quin surpassed 150 career points and Shorter-Robinson surpassed 100 career points.
- ASU out-score their opponents 64-37 after their four game Invitational. In every game played so far, the Sun Devils have secured double-digit goal totals.
- The Sun Devils have opened their season with a 4-0 start in the 2025 and 2024 seasons.
OPPONENT OUTLOOK:

- Chasing their first win of the season, Biola heads to Hawaii with two losses from the LBSU Mini Tournament against No. 3 USC and Cal State Fullerton.
- Biola finished the 2024 season just outside of the Top 25, with a 14-17 record. They picked up ranked wins throughout the season over Brown and CSUN, and won the Western Water Polo Association Championships before losing in the first round of the National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships.
- The Sun Devils own a 2-0 all-time record over the Eagles, with the most recent meeting coming in 2024, when Arizona State won 20-6.
- In the first weekend of the season, LMU tallied a 16-5 win in the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges matchup and a 10-16 loss against No. 3 USC.
- The team was ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll and features a roster of four freshmen and 21 returners.
- LMU ended the 2024 season ranked No. 9, and put up a 27-3 record. With ten ranked wins, they made it to the third round of the Golden Coast Championship. Their three losses all came against ranked opponents.
- The Sun Devils lead the Lions 8-2 in the all-time series, with the most recent meeting coming in 2024 when Arizona State won 12-7.
- Last weekend, Hawaii saw action versus San Jose State and Stanford in the Fresno State Polo-Palooza. The team split the weekend with a 15-6 win versus the Spartans and a 7-12 loss against the Cardinals.
- The Rainbow Wahines were ranked No. 5 in the preseason Collegiate Water Polo Association poll, the roster includes five freshmen and 21 returners.
