OKLAHOMA CITY - Sophomore pitcher Giselle "G" Juarez has been listed as one of the 10 finalists for the 2018 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, as announced on Wednesday.
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award enters its 17th- season and recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female collegiate softball players across the country.
Juarez is joined on the Top 10 list by seniors Paige Parker, (Oklahoma) and Vanessa Shippy, (Oklahoma State), juniors Kelly Barnhill (Florida), Megan Kleist, (Oregon) and Amanda Lorenz (Florida), sophomores Rachel Garcia (UCLA) and freshmen Aaliya Jordan (UCLA), Jocelyn Alo (Oklahoma) and Meghan Beaubien (Michigan). The Top three finalists will be announced on May 23. The Player of the Year will be revealed on May 29 in Oklahoma City prior to the start of the Women's College World Series.
Juarez enters the final week of the 2018 season ranked at or near the top in numerous statistical categories. Her impressive 0.92 ERA checks in as the second lowest in Pac-12, and seventh best in the country, while her 259 strikeouts lead the prolific Pac-12 this season. On the year, Juarez has recorded the nation's third most shutouts with 11, leading to 22 wins, a mark that ranks second in the conference.
Juarez and the sixth-ranked Arizona State softball team will close out the 2018 regular season at top-ranked UCLA this week. Game one of the three-game series is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
